Linc stares after Olive’s little car as it skitters down the drive. What the hell just happened? He’d thought they were really connecting, but Kate cut him off cold. He didn’t even get a chance to show her the old landau in the barn. Kate’s coachman would drive something like it, with a high-stepping pair in the shafts.

He returns the halter and ropes to the tack shed, pausing in the quiet gloom. He feels the dull ache of desire, a familiar state for him when Kate is around, but the winking coals are banked by rejection. Her words still sting. What is not ‘right’ about him? Is she genuinely uninterested?

He recalls that kiss in her kitchen, her body leaning hungrily into his. He could have sworn... What is he missing? What more can he do?

The stable cat jumps up onto the bench beside him. With a guttural, frustrated grunt, Linc reaches out to rub her head with deft fingers. Fixating on Kate’s anger today won’t help him. He lets his thoughts drift to her fictional coachman and what is obviously a steamy historical romance. No wonder Kate has looked so hot and bothered, every time he’s dropped by and she’s been writing. It’s a pity she is not in such a lather about him.

Still, if she is interested in horse-drawn vehicles, it might be a good prompt to get the landau tidied up. He’s been meaning to do it since Mum died. With oiled timber and fresh paint, it will look stunning, and he is sure Kate will like it.
