Kiriai was still in a daze as she walked to the cafeteria. Had Sento just asked her to be his girlfriend? A smile spread across her face. She wanted to tell someone, but who? Running through the possibilities put a damper on her elation. The development wouldn’t please either Eigo or Ojisan. That just left Isha, who would be supportive, but she always seemed obligated to dispense advice and warnings alongside congratulations. Why didn’t she have someone who would just be excited for her? Eigo was normally that person, but not this time.

You said I was a friend. You can share with me and I can practice emulating excitement. I promise I will try to improve.

Kiriai almost missed a step. She’d never considered Yabban, but the AI had always worked in her best interest and was a fast learner. Huh. Teaching a machine how to be a proper friend was intriguing. But you know everything that is going on in my head. It kind of ruins the part where I share my exciting news.

What news? Oh, wow! Did something happen with Sento?

Kiriai spluttered a startled laugh, drawing curious looks from a group of scrappers walking in the other direction down the hall.

Well? Was that an appropriate response from a friend?

Yes, Yabban. You surprised me, is all. Where did you learn to talk like that?

In addition to my training database, I have sections on modeling the behavior of people from different ages. I combined this with the information I’ve gathered since you activated me to generate a best guess.

Kiriai made an incredulous sound. Well, you did that pretty well.

Kiriai felt a touch of pleasure from Yabban and smiled. Even if Yabban couldn’t emulate a true human friend, she was definitely entertaining.

I can’t pretend you don’t already know Sento just asked to start a relationship with me, but I would like to talk about it with you.

All right, Kiriai. There was the briefest pause before Yabban continued. What do you think about the whole thing?

Kiriai walked into the cafeteria and postponed answering Yabban until she could fill her plate and find an empty seat. The bustle of the cafeteria was soothing. These were her people, intent on training, winning and improving in a way that outsiders rarely understood. And all were as ravenous as she was. There were plenty of fighters who had piled their plates even higher than hers or even had a second placed in front of them. It took a lot of fuel for a body to do what they did. Kiriai joined the frenzy and almost moaned with her first bite into the egg roll fried to a crisp perfection. Her mouth full, she realized another advantage of Yabban over a human friend—Kiriai could talk to her with her mouth full.
