Chapter Ten

Outside the Gordon compound, 6:05 p.m.

Something was very wrong. Mia should have departed the property by now.

Slade reached for his binoculars yet again, but it was pointless. From his position on a side street, he couldn’t see anything beyond that twelve-foot wall.

“Damn.”

He couldn’t call her cell phone. He couldn’t do one damned thing except wait for a move from inside the compound.

The small transmitting device he’d asked her to place on the first-floor security panel would jam the control frequency when activated. Until the device was turned on it remained undetectable. When the moment came that entry to the house was needed, a split second of interruption in the frequency would be all that was required. By the time any remaining security personnel recognized that something had gone wrong, it would be too late to prevent the intrusion. Worked like a charm every time.

Slade was prepared to make the necessary extraction but there was a lot he needed to know about Gordon’s movements and an extraction right now would render her assistance impotent to a great degree. Mia would brief him on all he needed to know as soon as she was out of the compound safely.

He glanced at his wristwatch once more—6:12 p.m.

His head moved from side to side with worry.

If she’d broken and given away the plan…Gordon would no doubt call the police. Then…hell, unless Jim, Ian and Lucas came up with a better plan…

Slade didn’t want to think about that. Too many lives depended upon this going down exactly as planned.

The gate started its slow swing inward. Slade sat up straighter. Adrenaline lit in his veins. The idea that she was late evoked a whole series of hard questions. Had she been questioned or had she suddenly decided she couldn’t be a part of this?

Maybe she’d simply had to work some overtime.

When she’d driven past his position, he waited another five seconds, then pulled out onto the street. He followed her to the rendezvous point—a convenience store well beyond the residential area Gordon called home.

He guided his truck into the slot next to Mia’s hybrid. She stared forward, not bothering even a brief glance in his direction.

Bad sign.

Slade swung out of his truck and walked around to the passenger side of her compact sedan. The door was unlocked. He opened it and dropped into the passenger seat.

“What happened?” He couldn’t resist stealing a look behind them to see if the police showed up to haul him in for questioning. Conspiracy to commit kidnapping was a crime. Not one taken lightly. Particularly when the target was rich and famous.

“I was fired.”

She didn’t look at him as she made this startling statement.

He’d expected a lot of things to come out of her pretty mouth but that wasn’t one of them. “Fired? On what grounds?”

Her face turned to his and that blue gaze, the color of the deepest sea, bored into his. “He…said I had failed to live up to the expectations of the position since he left office and that the new D.
