Chapter Eight
I nearly, quite intentionally, gave Nicolassa a chance to punish me for the cat ears, but I decided instead to behave. I wore them every day, and every day, she changed them. I wore several different types of cat ears, Minnie Mouse ears, and bunny ears. The bunny ears came with a fluffy tail.
Stef and I had our date. It was sweet and lovely. She stayed the night. That was also sweet and lovely. In the morning, we talked. I was young and just figuring things out. She wasnât ready to settle to one person. We decided weâd continue to play as we had, but it would remain casual. I was fine with that, and I think she was, too.
I made progress on the bookkeeping. It was taking time, but I brought the current status under control. I talked to every single known vendor and got copies of all receipts dating back three years. We sent flower arrangements to each of their accounting departments.
In the casino, I saw people, men and women both, spin the Wheel of Fortune. Half won chips. Half won punishments. No one asked me to paddle her. One man asked to be leashed to me, but I flat out said, âIâm sorry, but no. I work in the back office, and I canât take you there.â
I saw women â no men â wearing the weird masks, and then one day, I saw a woman spin and land on Mask. Security took her away. I looked for her later, finding her kneeling in the casino, the mask in place.
For a long time, I didnât hear from Cate, and I thought maybe sheâd moved beyond me. I was a little disappointed, but I understood. But then one Wednesday evening, Esme stopped up. I hadnât ordered anything, and I was surprised to see her. âThereâs someone in the lounge asking for you.â
I followed her down. Cate had a table, and there was already a soft drink waiting for me. Normally, I wouldnât trust something like that, but I knew I was safe here. Even if she managed to drug me, no one would let her take me anywhere.
I smiled, kissed her cheek, and sat down opposite her. âHow are you, Cate?â
âGood,â she said. âWork got crazy, but we have a breather now. Iâm sorry I havenât been here.â
âI understand about work.â
We chatted for a few minutes, and then she asked, âAre you still Madam Shira sometimes?â
âI wasnât for a while, but if youâd been here last night, youâd have seen her.â
âIâd like a date with Madam Shira,â she said.
âIâd like that, Cate. Did you mean now?â
âNo, but I wanted to ask in person.â
I smiled. âI appreciate that. I want you to arrange it through Nicolassa. Iâm here every night except Sunday, although I could come in.â
âIâm not going to ask you to give up your one day off,â she said. âTomorrow?â
âTomorrow would be lovely.â
âCould we start with dinner?â
âAlso lovely.â
She took my hands. âI canât stop thinking about you, Madam Shira.
