Daryn Disappears
On April 21, 1981, the same night that Colleen was reported missing, Daryn Johnsrude met Clifford Olson. Daryn was visiting Coquitlam from Saskatoon to stay with his mother and stepfather over Easter break. The 16-year-old was walking to buy cigarettes when Olson noticed him. Once again, Olson used the job offer as bait to get him in the car. Daryn was immediately excited when Olson insisted that the job entailed a lot of smoking marijuana and drinking beer. He began his routine with the beer and the sleeping pills until Daryn was sufficiently intoxicated.
Olson took the car off of the highway to the north of the Fraser River down to a more secluded, forested area. He raped Daryn while he lay unconscious on a picnic blanket. Olson took Daryn for a short walk before striking him with the hammer several times and killing him. He then threw the murder weapon and Daryn’s clothing into the Fraser River. Much like when he murdered Christine, Olson’s car got stuck trying to escape. He paid a young man to tow him out of two separate ditches on the way out. Later that night after getting his car cleaned, Olson was arrested for driving under the influence.
It was this night that Joan later remembered as very suspicious. Olson was at his parents’ house and drunkenly phoned Joan. Both Olson and his parents were audibly crying. Joan was not sure what to make of it. Joan demanded to speak with his mother and asked why they were all crying. His mother responded, “I can’t tell you, Clifford made me promise not to tell anyone.” Despite asking several times over the years what Olson had told them that night, his parents would never tell. Their responses were always highly emotional. Joan even caught Olson burning his clothes and shoes from the day of the murder. He told her to mind her own business.
Meanwhile, Daryn’s mother and stepfather were very concerned. His stepfather, Gary Rosenfeldt, later became a major advocate for victim’s rights in Canada after their poor experience of dealing with the police. Gary was surprised and disappointed at the lack of concern when the police came to interview them. Daryn was 16 and had a history of behavioral problems. Naturally, he had to be a runaway. Knowing the police weren’t looking, Gary spent his time searching throughout the streets of Vancouver. He was hoping to spot Daryn amongst the groups of homeless youth living there.
On May 2, two men out walking their dogs found Daryn’s body draped over a tree stump. His face was so decomposed and destroyed from the hammer that he could only be identified through dental records. The police contacted the Rosenfeldts and told them that a body had been found and that the medical examination proved it was not Daryn. A few days later, the RCMP called again. “Mrs. Rosenfeldt, I’m sorry, I guess it was your boy after all.” This horrifying blunder made an already devastating experience much worse.
Fred Maile was once again called in to investigate the scene.
