ASHER

“Cousin,” Tate says, leaping into my arms as soon as I walk into Inked.

She looks older than the last time I saw her, finally getting rid of her baby face.

“Hey Tater Tot,” I say, wrapping my arms around her. “What’s up, troublemaker?”

She laughs as she plops down, her boots making a loud thud against the shop floor. “You know how we do.” She gives me the biggest smile and punches me playfully in the shoulder.

“Not me, kid. I’m out of that game.”

She pouts. “Not you too.”

I shrug and tip my hands upward. “The adulting gig isn’t all it’s cracked up to be.”

“That ain’t no lie, cousin.” She peers over her shoulder, checking to see who’s around. When she realizes we’re alone, she whispers, “and this crew is no longer as much fun as I thought they were either. They’re old as fuck.”

“It happens to the best of us.” I reach out my hand and ruffle her hair, something she’s always hated but has come to expect from me. “So, tell me what happened? Why’s your ass here in Florida, and why in the hell are you wearing that black leather jacket in this heat?”

She twirls as she fixes her hair and drops her ass into the chair at the front desk. “Rowdy’s a dumb fuck.”

“Tell me something I don’t already know.” I lean an elbow against the desk, trying to extract as much information as I can out of her. “Want to expound on that?”

She sighs, resting her elbow on the desk, and places her chin in her palm. “He’s being framed.”

I roll my eyes at that statement. “You’re talking to me, Tate. Rowdy has never lived his life on the up-and-up.”

The last time I saw her, I’d gone up to Chicago to visit the family and party in the city. I met Rowdy only briefly, but everything about him screamed criminal. I don’t know how Angelo let his daughter date such an obvious asshole.

“He’s not a bad guy,” she tells me, like I’m a moron who’s going to buy her story about how her low-life biker boyfriend is really a knight in shining armor.

“How long have you two been together?”

“A long time.”

“How old were you when you started dating?”

“When we really started dating, or when I told my parents we started dating?”

I hang my head out of mental exhaustion. She’s a trying one. If I had a daughter like her, I’d probably lock her in her room every night in order to keep my sanity. “When you really started dating.”

“Sixteen.”

I mutter a slew of curse words under my breath.

“He thought I was twenty-one, though.”

It takes everything in me not to roll my eyes at the stupidity of what she just said. “Tate, you looked like you were sixteen until last year. You can’t feed that bullshit to me.”

She pushes her breasts together, smashing the logo from Guns N’ Roses, making it unreadable. “I’ve had these tits forever, and they aren’t those of a sixteen-year-old.”

“Then they were, in fact, the tits of a sixteen-year-old.
