hirteen months had passed since Tia was murdered. Blackout was back in Ohio, out on bail pending federal trial for the handgun with the altered firing
mechanism found in his car. Criminal EntEnt was damn near defunct pending paperwork adjustment by Quarters’ attorney. Keisha and Denise had secured a major label deal, as did Sharp. Quarters handed over a little more than $600,000 in tainted bills to his investors, with the help of his attorney, and maintained an air of legitimacy through the bank he and his investors used. But in reality Quarters was back in the street full force.
Quarters was at a block party on 135th Street, between Lenox and 5th Ave. Quarters was stretched on a lawn chair, eating a grilled cheeseburger surrounded by his Mary’s crew all of who had come in support of Boo. Boo had a WNBA fantasy league team and they had made it into the finals. They were on the court warming up, getting ready to play the defending champions, a team of girls from Harlem. Boo was on the court with her team watching the lay up line. Quarters sat watching Boo. It was crazy watching her; she had become so much more than he had expected. She had gone from the chubby Spanish speaking black girl, to the chocolate brown bombshell with model potential.
Quarters still wondered why Boo still cared for him after all the things he had put her through. He had keys to the house Boo had purchased in White Plains. She called the house their engagement ring. Boo was clapping her hands together and yelling at the girls to get it together. Quarters sat in the lawn chair smiling, not just at Boo, but at Trina also. Trina had just turned sixteen and was starting as shooting guard for Boo’s team.
Trina was Quarters’s and Nikki’s adopted daughter, even though there was no legitimate paperwork documenting the adoption. Quarters had taken her in after the incident in the projects with Pinky and Shizz. Trina lived out on Long Island with them. She had started going back to school and was doing well. A few months ago Quarters had driven Trina into the city to get an abortion. She wouldn’t tell him who she was pregnant by but sometime later she confided in Nikki and told her it was Sharp. Nikki made Quarters promise never to bring it up to either of them.
The game had started, it was almost halftime and Boo’s team was down seven points. Boo's point guard, a 5’2 golden brown girl with two French braids, was bringing the ball up court. The point guard crossed her defender, spun off a pick and passed the ball in the paint, as she spun off the pick to one of her teammates for an easy two points. The crowd went crazy because the pass was a no look off the spin move. The point guard threw her arms in the air and then crossed her arms across her chest in a mockery directed at her defender and the team bench.
