Chapter Nine

Khrelan

“Serol found our little human snooping, attempting to find information located on your com unit.” Fadox kept his voice low as he stood by my side, but I had a sense he wasn’t amused by her behavior or the situation we were in.

I stood on the bridge, watching Earth from a different perspective. Lexi’s personality was such that I’d anticipated she’d attempt to find answers to her burning questions. The conversation with her as well as what I’d found continued to haunt me. We were merely orbiting just outside the Earth’s atmosphere, as ordered, waiting. But for what? The foreboding feeling remained furrowing into the pit of my stomach. The ships surrounding Earth were also in a holding pattern, even though they were commanded by someone else entirely. I’d resisted the urge to contact them given the chancellor’s command.

But my instinct was never wrong.

“I assume she was punished?” I asked casually. The human was highly intelligent and very perceptive. Whatever she was searching for certainly had merit.

“Yes, but I don’t think that’s going to stop her from trying again. We may have to keep her on lockdown and perhaps on the prison floor.”

I gave him a harsh look, one that didn’t need clarification, but I gave it to him anyway. “I will decide what is best for our human, Lieutenant. She is my responsibility.”

His eyes flashed but he nodded immediately. “As you wish, Captain. I’m merely concerned at what she might find.”

“There is nothing to find.” I was nothing but a warrior, prepared for battle and to follow orders. Attempting to understand human nature in any regard was out of my comfort zone. However, the danger we were facing was real. Maybe relying on my training was necessary in order to provide the required method of protection. But just who were we protecting?

“You’re certain of that?”

“Meaning?”

“I suggest we speak of that in another location, Captain.” He cut his eyes toward the others, lifting his eyebrow.

“Yes.” I exhaled and turned my attention to the consoles, studying the number of Cenzan ships in close proximity. “There is almost an entire army surrounding Earth. They have no idea that we’re hovering, waiting for orders, the majority cloaked in very much the same manner as the city in which Lexi lived.”

“And you’re avoiding my concerns,” Fadox said through clenched teeth.

“I’m very well abreast of your concerns, Fadox, which are the same that I have. We are in the dark as to exactly what is going on with our people or our illustrious leaders. Colonization is imminent but what are the details? Are we taking their cities and compounds as our own, forcing them to live in prisons?”

“I sincerely hope that is not the case.”

“As do I. I managed to catch certain chatter on the communication lines. It seems that the prince is on his way here. I’ve also heard that at least two Comstar ships are scheduled for passage. Given what I know about Shandar Drateq, aren’t you the least bit surprised the
