Obviously, many other companies operate in the field of anti-corruption, offering specialized tools and knowledge to firms and organizations as to how to prevent corruption, but without cooperating directly with Transparency International. Sai Global is a company that offers a best practice and awareness-raising courses. A specific online course entitled “The Bribery of Public Officials” has been designed to “engage learners and allow them to apply their knowledge.” The objective of this course is to “introduce learners to the various anti-bribery laws, and train them to recognize situations in which bribery may be taking place” (Sai Global 2008).

As we can see, technologies of minimizing corruption risks do not go after specific “wrongdoers.” Even if international and national legislations forbid bribery and steps have been taken to impose a sanctions regime through the World Bank’s debarment list, which publicly blacklists specific individuals and companies, fighting corruption is generally a matter of corruption avoidance. Its practical effectuation entails governance at a distance. Indirect techniques, based on knowledge hierarchies established by specialized expertise, act on business itself and its environments to ensure that preventive measures are taken towards the perceived danger. However, there is, of course, no guarantee that a technique such as due diligence will achieve the desired effect on a full scale. Because if an intermediary is sufficiently sophisticated,

he can keep his image very clean while still paying bribes through relatives, off-shore accounts, or shell companies. It’s never possible to say with confidence that you’ve done enough due diligence, but the constraints of business require you to stop at some point.
