Chapter Eight
Thank you.
I don’t know.
It was a strange thing to say, right?
I mean the woman had kissed me senseless. And I was all like, “Gratitude.” Total Spartacus characters who didn’t really form complete sentences.
And there I went again. Damn, Netflix had been a close companion for far too long.
I’d walked Tamera to her car. Had told her to wait for me as I reached my Jeep and stashed away the basket. Then I’d followed her down the switchbacks and into Sedona, keeping an eye out for the dirty white van. The Rubicon was wired with hands-free calling so I dialed up Amano to get a report.
“Harvin’s still up north,” he told me. “Looks like he’s camping at Ashurst Lake. Not the easiest area to pinpoint specifically where he is, but the GPS can gauge the general location, and that’s what counts.”
“Perfect,” I said. “Tamera has to meet with a wedding couple tonight in Sedona. I don’t want her stressing out over this asshole springing up out of nowhere again.”
“Let me tail her,” Amano offered, because he knew I was supposed to be at the Lux this evening.
I told him, “There’s no risk in her being here when Harvin’s up at Ashurst. No need to shadow her in person.” Again, I didn’t know how she’d feel about that. It’d taken some getting used to for Ari.
Amano—the very impassive, behemoth of a man—paused for a few seconds, hedging. Not his usual course of action. Eventually he conceded. “You’re right. So, I’ll continue monitoring the camera and live-streaming feed.”
“That’s helpful. Thanks,” I said.
He backed up his support of protecting Tamera by saying, “It’ll be difficult for you to remain committed to a prior engagement at the resort, while someone’s out there with Tamera in his crosshairs.”
That sent a chill down my spine. Yet I told him, “We don’t know that for a fact.”
“Until we do, I’ll keep an eye on the GPS. I’ll be able to tell if Harvin makes a move toward Sedona.”
I couldn’t argue with that. And I had been the one to talk him into taking household detail tonight versus Lux detail. Not so much “talked him into it.” I wasn’t delusional or anything. Amano did what Amano wanted to do.
I wasn’t saying Amano was too old for rousing 10,000 Lux security activities. Not by a long shot. I was fairly certain he could kick my ass, even after all he’d taught me. I just wanted him to take it easy.
I also understood that Amano craved the glory days; therefore, focusing on Tamera’s safety while he also looked after the household … well, that probably kept him from having any misguided notions about being washed up.
I’d like to tell him he had no worries there. Shit, I relied on him through thick and thin. But trying to convince him of that? Uh-uh. No way. The man had to feel it himself.
I got that.
And since I’d never had trouble putting my own life in his hands, I was eternally grateful he wanted to help out with my new girlfriend.
