Orsonâs a natural. I glance over at him from where Iâm working with my sixteeners to see him helping one of the kids with the steering column on their car. His calming presence does well here. Where the kids are used to me being maybe too passionate about cars that I skip steps and start talking about things too advanced for them to follow, he slows it down. Heâs their quiet, and Iâm their chaos.
My grin widens as I think of us like that. Two parts working together.
Thereâs no denying Orsonâs got me twisted up and hardly able to recognize myself. Iâve always been an affectionate guy, open to dating but never getting that pull to anyone, and now Orsonâs in my life, I never want him to leave it.
Heâs like a new plaything Iâm suddenly obsessed with, and Iâm worried by how quickly that feeling has snuck up on me. The last thing Iâd ever want to do is get bored and hurt him, but surely this kind of deep attachment isnât normal. I wanted him to stay at my place all week; I wanted to cook him dinner and watch him wash up, have some more orgasms, but mostly just spoon on the couch, watching reality TV.
Now Iâve got that small taste of domesticity, I donât want to give it up. When we talked about hooking up last week, Orson said he didnât do casual, but we never went into details about what that meant. Are we friends who hook up exclusively? Are we dating? More? My thoughts wonât stop cycling through all the possibilitiesâincluding the bullshit ones that make no sense but late at night Iâm convinced are real. That Orson is only using me. Experimenting. That it all means nothing and heâll walk away happy and sated, leaving me to doubt every move Iâve made with him.
Thatâs not Orson, but my insecurities donât like to play fair.
âHe your boyfriend?â Daryl asks.
I turn my attention back to the soapbox car Iâm working on. Iâm supposed to be checking the steering has been put together properly and wonât malfunction midrace, so being distracted right now isnât great timing.
âIgnoring the question,â Erin pipes in. âSo thatâs either an âI want him to be, and heâs notâ or an âIâm not talking about my sex life with kids,â but weâre sixteen, so I donât think that counts.â
âYeah, itâs not like weâre virgins,â Crispin says.
I throw up my hands. âIâm not listening to any of this.â
Daryl sniggers. âNever took you for a prude.â
âYeah, dude, youâve been to prison. Youâve heard way worse things than teens drinking and having sex. The horror!â Crispin pretends to fall back in shock.
I have no idea how we got into this conversation, but itâs making me glad I never had kids of my own. Theyâre brats. The lot of them. âI know itâs hard for you smart-asses to believe, but I was your age too. I know exactly what I got up to then, and now
