"How's Lizzie?" Dylan asked.

Sandra looked up from the book she was engrossed in when Dylan crossed the room toward her. "She's gonna be just fine. The doctor put her on antibiotics. She's got a slight chest cold, is all." Her gaze swept the room behind him. "So where's the Lady Caitlin?"

Dylan shrugged and said nothing. He had no idea where Cait was right now, and he told himself he didn't give a damn. The police had been roaming the place all afternoon. Detective Barnes in his loud shirt and khaki trousers, and the undisguised suspicion in his eyes every time he glanced Dylan's way had been almost too much. They'd questioned everyone, even Ellen. And their forensics crew had only just packed up and left, having found nothing on the cliffs.

Sandra rose and stood near him. She rested her hands lightly on his shoulders. "I don't know what I'd have done without you last night."

"I care about Lizzie." The glint in her eyes made him uncomfortable.

"More than her own daddy does."

"That’s not true, Sandra. Thomas just—"

"Just what?" She shook her head. "He don't want her. Or me, either. You treat us better than he ever has."

"He needs time to adjust to the idea of being a father." Dylan went to step backward, but her hands slid around to the base of his neck.

"Lizzie's three months old. How much time you s'pose it’s gonna take?" She sighed and a slight smile touched her full lips. "It doesn't matter. I don't want him, either." Her grip tightened, pulling her body closer until it pressed tight to his. "You know who I want."

"Sandra, for Chri—"

Footsteps behind him made his spine stiffen. He knew without turning that Caitlin had come in. He caught the smug glance Sandra threw over his shoulder, before she lowered her head onto it.

Dylan caught her hands, unwound them from his neck, and stepped away from her. He turned, but only in time to see Caitlin's rigid back as she marched up the stairs. He swung his gaze back to Sandra. She was smiling.

"Dammit, Sandra! Do you know what she's probably thinking?

She shrugged. "I really don't care what she thinks."

"It was deliberate, wasn't it?" Dylan's voice was far louder than necessary, but he did nothing about it. He had enough trouble right now without Sandra adding to it with her theatrics.

"She might as well know where things stand," Sandra yelled back. "You don't want her. I'd be so much better for you than she's ever been, can't you see that?" She lunged toward him again, throwing her arms around him.

Dylan shoved her away. She staggered backward, tripped on the book she'd dropped and fell to the floor.

"What the hell is going on in here?" Thomas strode into the room with Genevieve at his side. When Dylan glanced up, he saw Caitlin standing halfway up the stairs, staring downward. All of them had seen him shove Sandra. Cait must have heard the entire exchange.

Thomas crossed the room and reached down to take his wife's hand and pull her to her feet.
