Chapter Twenty-One

Lucy

“Thank you for telling me that. Now I should probably tell you…” He looks down at our entwined hands, and I get a little nervous. Did I just ruin everything? Is my lack of experience a turn off? When he looks back into my eyes, my heart almost stops at the intensity in his. “I am ridiculously fucking attracted to you.”

“You are?” I gape at him slack jawed and can only imagine the look of shock on my face right now. I mean, I hoped, but it’s nice to have it validated. I think my heart may beat out of my chest. Does he know I feel the same way?

“More than I can possibly express in words.” His eyes soften and he cups my face between his hands. “And I’d never want to do anything to scare you.”

Reaching up, I put my hand over his heart. “You could never scare me.”

Putting one hand over mine, he whispers, “I mean by pushing you faster than you’re ready to go. Things have been going so great with us, so I don’t want to rush it and risk freaking either of us out. You know what I mean?”

“And you wouldn’t, would you.” It comes out as a statement, not a question. “I always feel safe with you.”

His eyes soften even more before he closes them and puts his forehead to mine. “I can’t tell you what it means to hear you say that.” Framing his face in my hands, I pull back and smile because I have never felt such a strong connection with anyone. Nothing has ever felt so right than this moment in time.

“I’m ready,” I whisper, leaning forward and pressing my lips to his, my hands sliding down and lifting the hem of his t-shirt, brushing his stomach. My God, I almost forgot how hard he is everywhere. I can feel every ridge of his abs. My guy is hot.

“Are you sure, honey?” he asks as he pulls back just enough to look into my eyes.

“Surer than I’ve ever been about anything.” I know that’s the truth because I’m not the least bit nervous. My frantic pulse isn’t fear. It’s anticipation of finally being with the guy of my dreams. I feel like his walls are finally coming down, and the more I glimpse of this vulnerable side of him, the more I realize I’m falling for him.

Taking my hand, he pulls me out of my seat and leads me up the stairs to his apartment. It feels like I’m floating as I follow him. The dogs run up before us, so we just bring all three into Cal’s apartment. “We’ll clean up later,” he says about our dinner mess.

He pulls me in for a kiss after we cross the threshold of his apartment door. He then takes my hand again. It feels like a dream. No rush. When we get to his bedroom door, Boone tries to push in behind us, but Cal stops him at the door. “Sorry, bud, we need a little privacy.
