CHAPTER 14
Staying in the small room with energy bubbling around her was harder than Jerry had ever anticipated. She paced back and forth, nerves running through her entire body from the top of her head to the tips of her toes. She stripped off her clothes, freeing herself from their confines, and stood in nothing other than a tight pair of britches and her tunic.
Jerry leaned against the desk and turned on the radio. She needed to know what they were saying about the information Vivian had dropped, if it had made any dent in the monotonous monologue that was typical for the news outlets. She bounced on her bare toes, the cold from the floor seeping into her skin and reminding her that she was alive.
She had spent hours with the authorities, and she had survived. They hadnât once figured out who she was or where she had escaped from. She had done the impossible. She had recreated herself as someone new, someone who didnât have a checkered history.
The radio beeped, catching her attention. âThe death toll rises from this virus, the new variant raging through the Omar Region and the Kilgorii Region.â
Jerryâs heart sank. Even if they did out Bert Riley as the cause of everything, the devastation was already done. The amount of people who had died because they were killed out of fear of the virus or because they couldnât find drugs to keep themselves saneâtheyâd literally torn themselves apart. Jerry had witnessed it so many timesâtoo many times.
The door snicked open, and she was surprised she hadnât heard Arloa coming down the long hallway. Straightening her back, Jerry put her hands on her hips as Arloa stared at her with wide eyes. âThey didnât talk about it on the news outlets.â
âNot at all?â Jerry frowned.
Arloa shook her head. âI kept it on all day, waiting.â
âJust in Raegina or everywhere?â
âEverywhere.â
Disappointment filled her. Jerry sat on the edge of the table and closed her eyes, dropping her chin to her chest. âWhat do we do now?â
âWe wait. Maybe theyâll pick it up in the morning.â
âThey wonât. Donât put hope where there is none.â
Arloa pulled off her gloves and dropped them onto the table. Immediately she pulled off her overcoat, undoing the buckles and tossing it over the back of the chair. Jerry had to struggle to rip her gaze from the edge of the corset, where Arloaâs creamy skin pushed against the tight confines of the material, to Arloaâs steel-blue gaze.
âWe start a secondary plan then.â
âHow?â Jerry asked, her voice getting caught in her throat.
Arloa put her hand on her hip. âWe need to increase the pressure on Riley, and we need to find more information about him and what heâs done. I already have some people on it.â
âYou canât keep putting yourself at risk.â Jerry reached forward, snagging a loose curl and wrapping it around her fingertip. She gave a swift tug. âI need you here.â
Arloaâs gaze softened. âI am here.â
âI was starting to panic this evening, waiting for the bells to toll.
