Chapter Fourteen

We spent a good forty-five minutes scouring the offices, with most of that time devoted to the one that most closely resembled a human habitation on the assumption that it had belong to Tomlinson.

Not that the feds had left it in great condition. They’d opened the mattress with razors, pulled the stuffing out of the sofa, and ripped every print and picture out of its frame. But for all the flotsam and jetsam of the search, there were at least fewer empty bottles and pizza boxes here.

If there had been anything worthwhile here, though, it had long been carted away. Presumably to some FBI lab or storage locker somewhere.

So, with no more idea of where Tomlinson might have gone or who he’d been working for than before, he headed back to the broken window.

A wasted trip in one sense, but I didn’t fully regard it as a waste. We’d learned something about Meryatum. Something huge.

And we’d reached an accord, kind of. He could drop his act, and we didn’t have to worry about harboring an ancient war criminal.

Someone smarter than me might have had something profound to say about small victories or silver linings. Me? I was just glad we wouldn’t be at each other’s throats quite as much moving forward.

We’d crossed half the warehouse when my phone rang. “Oh hell. This better not be O’Donnell,” I said. “I don’t want to have to lie to him.”

“As if you haven’t done that before,” Murphy muttered.

I ignored the comment and glanced at my phone. Big Z scrawled across the screen. “Oh hell.” I knew I had to have this particular conversation, but I wasn’t looking forward to it.

Still, I answered with so much fake cheer that I gave Murphy and his conversation with O’Donnell a run for its money in the BS games. “Big Z, how’s Miami treating you?”

“Miami’s fine. It’s New Boston I’m not feeling so good about,” he answered. “What the hell happened to my boys the other night, Jilly?”

“Nothing,” I said.

“Nothing? That’s not what I hear. I hear they were disrespected. Mad disrespected, by some clown in a suit who was threatening to send them to jail.”

“Oh…that.”

“Yeah. That.”

“There was a little misunderstanding. But we got it all sorted out.”

“Got it all sorted out?” His tone rose. “Jilly, these are my boys. They were doing you a favor. Now look, we’re friends. I like you, for a breather. Me, you, the boneman, we go back. But I can’t be risking my boys ending up in lockup for doing you a favor.”

Oh hell. “No, I know. That’s why I took care of it, Big Z. Look, I’m real sorry. We both are. Murphy, he’s new. He doesn’t understand how things work.”

“What now?” Murphy started, before I shot him a look that shut him up.

“Who was that?”

“What? Oh, it’s loud here. What I’m saying is, we’re sorry. It won’t happen again.”

Silence. Then, a long sigh. “Well, you’re lucky I like you. But okay. We’ll let bygones be bygones. You just keep that fed on a leash, you hear me?”

“You got it.
