“Galen, you’re becoming a large disappointment.”

The angel looked up, refraining from showing a scowl as Brandon stood before him again.

“In what way could I possibly be a disappointment to you?” he replied tightly.

“Don’t take that tone with me. You were given an order and you’ve yet to follow it.” Brandon waved a hand and the two were shrouded in darkness, visible only to each other. “How much more direct must I be?”

“In case you’ve forgotten, I’m at the head of the military forces here. I have to face the most powerful of the angels and I’ve yet to get any indication of godly intervention. Which order would you like me to follow first?”

Brandon raised an eyebrow. “You’re getting a bit snappy for an angel.”

“I’m also a bit overworked for someone who is not an archangel.”

Brandon chuckled. “Alright, I’ll grant you that. Would you like a break?”

Galen narrowed his eyes. “What’s the catch?”

“There’s a specific room in the palace that’s vacant and you’re free to take a rest in undisturbed. Anywhere else and you’ll be pestered and forced back into your current situation.”

“What’s the catch?” Galen asked.

Brandon smiled. “You want a break or not, Galen?”

The angel sighed. “Yes, I would like a break, however brief it may be.”

“Granted.” Brandon waved his hand and Galen found himself standing with the god outside of a room he’d not seen before.

“Where are we?” he asked.

“A room that even Verlaine understood the use for,” Brandon answered vaguely.

The door opened, revealing a candlelit room inside. Brandon waved his hand over Galen’s face and the angel felt a surge of energy flow through him.

“What did you just do?” Galen demanded.

“It’s a gift from a goddess. Something is hidden in the shadows of your heart, and it’s time to set it free. Now go inside and take your break.”

Galen advanced into the room slowly and the door closed behind him. He was wary. The gods gave gifts that were never what they seemed.

“You really shouldn’t be so nervous. Don’t you know what this room is?” Anaya walked towards him, dressed in a pale pink gown.

“I had a feeling you’d be here.” Galen watched her approach.

“Are you upset?” she asked.

“Should I be?”

“Don’t be difficult.”

Galen raised an eyebrow. “I’m aware of this room. It’s where the queen takes her consorts. I’m not quite that out of touch. I know well the things that happen here. So, am I to be your consort? You have no wish for a husband?”

“I have no wish to be queen,” Anaya told him. “What I want is the simple life I asked Brandon for. He gave me that life and he gave me my mate as well.”

Galen’s gaze was unreadable as he gazed down at her. “Yes, I suppose he did. But someone has to rule in your stead. There is no one else in line for the throne.”

“I don’t particularly care, Galen. For once, it’s time to focus on us.” Anaya advanced towards him and placed a hand on his stomach. “Now, are you
