Chapter Three

Homeworld

AMID THE SWIRLING SAND of the dead zone, a caravan of vehicles sped towards the alien ship resting in its center. As the large entourage arrived near the ships edge, they surrounded it in a semicircle. The doors opened to let out members of the various covens wearing attire wholly different than their usual flare. Underneath flowing robes, they wore full body suits designed, by Grieger’s coven, for combat.

In the four cargo trucks were select soldiers from the top covens. General Tervan stepped down from the back of the first one and surveyed the area. He was not happy with the number of people who were combat ready. When the weapons were installed, Marchand readjusted the capacity for the ship. Originally able to accommodate one thousand, it now dropped to eight hundred and fifty. The only way they would be victorious in their efforts was if the emperor was dead and the planet was in a lawless state. Which they all knew was not the case.

He saw Chase Ambrook adjust his robes, not being used to them. His guardian was beside him, as always, nibbling on a chunk of meat in his hand. Falson Sapienti and his guardian stood solemn, seemingly nervous.

You should be, the General chided him silently.

Queen Erena and Count Durante emerged from their vehicle looking almost regal in colorful robes that represented their family. Count Grieger somehow appeared staunch in his robes. Of the elders, they were the ones in addition to Count Sapienti going. He still was in shock after Queen Erena left the De Luce castle in the hands of Princess Adelia. Images of the walls raining in blood came to mind.

“Are we ready for launch?” Chase Ambrook asked Marchand.

Marchand turned away from the diagnostics screen on his tablet and frowned.

“How about getting ready for boarding first?”

Miffed, Chase looked away.

Count Grieger went up to Marchand.

“Have you reconsidered?” He eyed the twins hovering around their car. They had already prepared for if their father granted their wish by wearing the same attire as the others.

“Celeste would be livid if I told them yes.”

“Hmmm?”

Marchand let out a loud sigh. He continued doing the last minute checks and began the sequence to open the hatch. The front section of the hull slid upwards to allow for the ramp to extend down.

“Your chariot awaits,” Marchand announced.

Supplies were loaded up first, forcing the anxious passengers to wait nearly two hours before they could board. Next, the crew went in to start up the launch sequences and do another internal check from the command center. Falson’s guardian came up to General Tervan and the two men stood staring at each other for a split second.

“What do you need, guardian?” Tervan asked curtly.

“I am not one to run from a fight these days, but if it looks like it’s going to go even a little bit sideways, I will take Falson and my lord and head back to the ship.”

Tervan’s eyes flashed with intrigue. He found a new liking for the guardian.
