Chapter Seven
When Tyler handed her onto the yacht heâd reserved for the evening, a luxury number with room for ten guests and ten crew members, Lilah felt her hands begin to shake. There were no other guests, just her and Tyler. She was reminded for the first time in a long time of just who he was and who she was.
She was the daydreaming young girl who ran into walls when he came around. He was the confident son of James and Lucille Westlake, child of privilege, heir to the Westlake dynasty, a man who attracted women the way rock stars attracted groupies. Several of those women were lounging near the pier right now, sending her furious looks. Maybe they knew that this wasnât real and they wanted her to get out of the way so that they could step in and be next in line.
Maybe she should do just that.
But she glanced up that moment into Tylerâs green eyes. He was looking as if this were the most exciting moment of his life. Sheâd never, ever had anyone look at her as if she were personally responsible for making their evening special.
Probably hundreds of women have seen that look, she told herself. But she smiled, anyway. Why shouldnât she enjoy this evening with Tyler? It would never come again.
âAll set?â he asked.
She nodded. âWhat is all this?â she asked, motioning to the yacht.
âSetting. Magic. A mood maker.â
No question about that. The gentle rolling of the deck beneath her feet, the breeze off the water, the gathering dusk, the gorgeous man gazing down at her possessively, all were making her head spin just a little.
âYouâre lovely tonight,â he told her. His low, deep voice felt like fingers skimming along her skin, dipping beneath the narrow straps of her short, pale-blue dress.
Lilah took a deep breath. âYouâre lovely, too.â
âDo me a favor. Donât tell Danny that. The temptation to analyze your words would be just too tempting, but thank you.â
The slow heat of a blush climbed her skin, but Lilah didnât apologize. In stark black and white, his broad shoulders nearly blocking out the sky behind him, Tyler wasnât exactly lovely. But he was incredibly handsome. He was the kind of man that made a woman want to push her hands beneath the lapels of his jacket and slide her fingers up his chest.
âIâve never been on a vessel like this,â she said suddenly. âNot this large, anyway. Not one that was privately owned. Where are we going?â
He slowly shook his head and took her hand, leading her to a table located near the bow. The table was covered in white linen with silver candlesticks and silver-edged china. The flames of slender white candles reflected in the crystal. A bottle of wine rested in a basket. âWeâre not going far tonight. Close enough that anyone standing on the shore can see and make a report to anyone who might be interested, far enough away that we canât be heard if we keep our voices low.
