Chapter 10

The plan to put Danny in touch with Ricky Roda was a simple one. Grab him and run.

There were a few complications, like bodyguards with guns, but Danny figured he could get around that.

If only he could get around Martha.

"No." Her voice was emphatic. "I'm not putting my father in danger again."

"He won't be in danger," Danny said. "Not like last time. No one will be shooting at us. It'll just be like a Sunday drive."

"Right."

The kettle boiled, shrieking holy hell into the kitchen. They were perched on stools at the counter that formed the outer edge of the room and separated it from the living room.

Martha's seat scraped back and a second later the screeching stopped. Door and drawers opened and closed. "Tea or Maxwell House?"

"Coffee." He needed something to keep him awake. If he let himself, he'd fall flat on his face. But they had to move fast and tying up this key loose end was important. "He told you he wants to help. Here's how he can help. We need a van."

"You can have his van. But not him. Let Jake drive." Something clicked in front of him. "Coffee's up," she murmured.

He eased his hands over the edge of the counter until he located the mug. "We need Jake for other things."

"No."

"I'll just ask him myself."

"You don't know his phone number." Her voice had gone away, then come back again. The other stool moved, and he assumed she'd filled her own cup and sat back down. "And I'm not giving it to you."

"Are you kidding? I've got the resources of the mighty TCF behind me. Phone numbers are nothing."

She grumbled, the sound like a frown deep in her throat. "If anything happens to him…"

"Nothing's going to happen to him."

Before he could close the deal, his cell phone rang. He brought it out of his pocket and fumbled for a button to push.

"Danny?"

He recognized the voice. "Beth?" A zip of fear. Why was his sister calling him? "Is everything okay?"

"Oh, my God, you're alive. He's alive!" She spoke off the receiver, and a cheer went up. Male voices in the background.

"Are you all right? Where are you? Mike and Bob Parnell are here. They said something ha-happened. That you might be—" Her voice started to break.

"I'm all right," he said quickly. "I promise." Guilt replaced the fear. Of course the department would contact Beth and scare the shit out of her. He should have called her himself.

"But where are you?"

"I'm safe."

"Let me talk to him." That sounded like Parnell. Danny tensed, not wanting to believe the betrayal at the farmhouse could lead right back to him, but knowing it could.

"Are you all right? What the hell happened at the farmhouse?"

Danny debated how much to reveal. He was shooting in the dark, and didn't know who to trust. "Two men. Maybe three. I don't know exactly. But our friend was there."

"The friend who paid you a house call?"

"One and the same."

"How do you know? Did Miss Crowe see him?"

Danny bristled at the lack of confidence the question implied.
