CHAPTER ELEVEN

An unwanted guest

A chill wind ran through the woods howling as the sun swept down upon a winter’s day. Zeralden leaned back on the snow and concentrated on healing her wound. The infant dragon took the opportunity to curl up on her stomach and rest. She wanted to move him but it would break her concentration. Kat declined to notice the discomfort he caused. The early wind settled yet she could not stay. She changed her cloak putting the old one into the sova bag. It shrank into a tiny pouch and she hid it away. Kat ran through the soft snow eager to move on, she could not blame him. She rubbed her arms and held the hood close so she could glance around.

An eerie glow filtered through the fog wafting amid the trees. A bird screeched out from above. The leaves held on in a final scattering through the woods. She stayed clear of any trail following the infant dragon’s lead. The sun rose marking the middle of the day and she peered around, ‘Where are we?’

Katholomu glanced back, Zeralden had covered their tracks. She was starting to wonder if that had been a mistake. She removed the small circular device and opened the case. The talik showed a faint signal. ‘This way,’ she spoke.

The woods became dense spreading shadows along the ground. Kat remained close as the branches rustled. A movement caught her eye and the fog thickened as it gathered around the edges. Kat’s ear pricked up. A faint sound carried on the wind louder than the swaying branches. She took a step back and Tavion covered her eyes, ‘Don’t look.’

She exclaimed, ‘What?’

The ground fell away beneath them and she heard Kat screech.

Darkness set in and the Arroada sorcerer, Tavion, stood back. She peered up at the solid earth that trapped them beneath the surface. Muffled sounds pierced through the tiny holes leading down. It became louder and the distant rumbling of sorcery filtered into the void. ‘You made a powerful enemy,’ he whispered.

She went pale. ‘Not me,’ he said.

They listened as the sounds from above grew closer, they were right above. Then she heard Jule shouting over the noise. The Dreshan sorceress was so close, Zeralden froze to the spot.

Tavion waited as the sounds echoed in the shadows. She noticed the scars running along his shoulder and their eyes locked. He reached out his hand and she followed. The tunnels were rough and sturdy, their small lights guided the way. An array of tunnels led into a larger space that greeted them. She glanced above to the largest sacra seal she had seen. It loomed overhead embedded in the ceiling. She stepped on the floor underneath and it gave a small glow. She gazed down to see the second sacra seal a mirror image of the one above. They were perfectly aligned.

If it were not for the seals the place would appear ordinary. The plain tunnels carved into the ground wound around. She took care on the rough steps and peered up at the elegant columns on the great hall.
