CHAPTER 21

HART

Something was definitely different when I opened my eyes the next morning. The sun filtering in through the curtains was the same. The room was the same. The boat was the same. But I felt different—in the best way possible.

Stretching, I rolled over and caught a whiff of perfume. Memories flooded my mind. Images of Juliet’s beautiful body beneath me as we made love brought a smile to my face. God, that woman was hot. And she didn’t even know it. How could someone so gorgeous be so unassuming?

And smart. I went over the conversations we’d had, particularly the day before at the zoo, over dinner, and in the hot tub. She always had something intelligent to say. It was no wonder her business was such a huge success.

Reluctantly, I rolled out of bed and headed to the shower. The last thing I wanted to do was wash her scent off my body. But I couldn’t walk around all day with the musk of sex hanging over me. Something told me, if Greg caught even the tiniest sniff of it, he’d be on me like the black plague on a rat-covered flea.

In the shower, my mind went back to Juliet. Her moans and cries had told me she was having a good time. So why the hell had she gotten up and fled the scene so quickly afterward? I hoped that whatever had made her react that way was something we could get past.

I didn’t want to lose her friendship just because we’d had sex. Of all of the women I’d gotten to know on this cruise, Juliet was by far the most special to me. Taking a deep breath, I let the warm water wash over my body. If I’d managed to fuck this up because I couldn’t control my impulses, I’d be pissed at myself for a long time.

At least we were on a ship. She couldn’t hide from me forever in this sort of situation. It was a finite vessel with only so many places to go. Eventually, I would have to see her again,

After draining half of the hot water tanks on the ship, I reluctantly turned the water off and stepped out. My growling stomach insisted that I go find some sustenance and stop wallowing in the what-ifs. Toweling off, I headed out to get dressed and got three buttons on my shirt fastened when a familiar banging on my door told me my time was up.

Thankfully, housekeeping had come while I was in the shower, so all signs that Juliet had been here were gone. With a deep breath, I opened the door.

“He’s alive!” Greg proclaimed in a voice straight out of a horror movie. “I was beginning to think maybe you fell overboard.”

“What time is it?” I asked, backing up to look at the clock by my bed. It wasn’t even noon yet. He made it sound like it was almost midnight.

“It’s time you explained to me what the hell happened to you two last night!” He walked into my room, his arms folded across his chest.
