Chapter 10

Georgia didn’t know what she was venturing into when she accepted the position of General Manager at the Texas Oil Refinery. Sure she had experience in the field and was more than qualified for the job, but the hands on experience she was getting now was starting to drain her.

“Need help?” Frank Downy asked as he stuck his head around the door.

Georgia was a proud woman and not willing to accept defeat, especially to Frank. She would get everything done even if it killed her. Which it seemed likely to do. “I’m good, thanks,” she told him.

“You know,” he said as he moved inside and closed the door, “you don’t have to try to solve everything on your own. The last General Manager we had...”

“I don’t care about the last Manager you had,” she snapped. She was getting tired of him poking his nose into her office everyday as if he was waiting for the day when she would cave and he could have the job he had always wanted. “I told you I am fine. I can handle it.”

“Alright. It’s just that I know how overwhelming this job can be and I would help you in any way I can,” he persisted.

“So you can go back and report to everyone my incompetence in the position? No thank you Mr. Downy. I suggest you get back to operations and leave the conferences to me. If you really thought it was that overwhelming you wouldn’t be so after it would you?”

“Men and women are different,” he said as he headed for the door. “Good day Miss Williams. It is Miss isn’t it?”

Was that a crack he made about her marital status, right after his chauvinism? Georgia was about to toss a few choice words at him, but she thought better of it. He had wanted her job so she would use that to conquer him. as far as she was concerned she had already won and she wouldn’t allow him to get the better of her. She knew he was trying to provoke her now, so she remained calm and sank into her chair as she watched him leave.

“Close the door behind you,” she said. By the time he looked around she was already knee deep in a pile of reports. He had to give it to her; she was one heck of a woman.

By the time the door closed there was another knock. “Frank, this really isn’t the time,” she said.

“It isn’t Frank Miss Williams,” Grace said as she opened the door. “It is only I.”

“Oh Grace, come on in. I thought it was Frank returning.”

Grace chuckled then. “I see he was already here. Don’t you pay any attention to him Miss Williams; he is one of those power hungry males. The last Manager that was here was practically run out of here because of Frank; he undermined the man at every turn. I figure he wanted the position for himself and when Mr. Rogers resigned he thought for sure he would get the job.
