ADAM

Julian and I walk into a large house with huge, white marble pillars at the entrance. Two beautiful women greet the guests at the door where a waiter holds a tray with drinks. He nods once in my direction, a familiar military greeting, that’s how we identify one of our own. He’s one of many Mortalis Aaron implanted in the house. We pass him without a second glance.

I adjust the transmitter in my ear. I don’t like the way it tickles. It’s a small, round device we have to stick inside the canal, so it’s not visible to the eye. Since nothing is happening, I turn it off for the time being. I like to maintain my privacy when I can. Knowing that someone is listening to the rhythm of my breathing makes me feel vulnerable. Besides, my Linux is on, and they can send me info through it if they need to.

“Let’s split. Find the target and keep your eyes on him. We’ll do it from different angles,” Julian says before he strides away.

Finding the target isn’t hard. Women are all around him: touching, laughing, and flirting. One of the things we learn in the psychology class at the compound is to read people’s body language. It reveals so much more than words. The way someone leans on one leg, where they rest their hands, how they position their neck, and even how many times per minute someone’s eyelashes open and close all convey information about them. All of these things that people don’t pay attention to, often hold the answers we’re looking for.

Ethan is smiling, showing all his teeth. That shows his confidence—he believes he’s entitled of all the attention he’s getting. However, when one of the women touches his arm, his smile reduces and his body posture changes. It’s a natural bodily reaction to unpleasant feelings. If he liked the touch, he’d lean closer to her, but he doesn’t. Maybe he doesn’t like her, or maybe he’s just not interested. His eyes roam around the room. He’s looking for a way out, somewhere else to be. They come to rest on one specific place, widen slightly, and now his jaw relaxes—he’s found something he likes.

I search for what has captured his attention and my eyes land on her. Now it’s my turn to stiffen. My turn to react to something I don’t find pleasant. But my mind reacts differently than I anticipate. My jaw relaxes, my eyes have found what I have been dying to see: Livia, even more beautiful than she is in my dreams. My Linux vibrates. It’s a message from Julian.

All targets here-camouflage.

Right, I can’t be seen. They’d figure it all out. I back into the room and find a corner in which to hide. I glance over to where I last saw her. They’re all here. Jordan is next to Livia. Daniel and Mason are couple feet behind. I look around for Julian, and I spot him close to where the open bar is located.
