CHAPTER FIFTEEN

Blake

BLAKE SCOWLED AS KAYLA left the dining room on Wyatt’s arm. It was only after they’d exited that he realised Imogen had her hand over his fist. He unclenched his hand and glared at her, and she pulled back immediately. A surge of guilt rushed through him as she flinched, but he continued to scowl at Marcus. The guy clearly didn’t want Kayla around today, and after Wyatt’s warnings, his wolf was agitated.

“Can we get this over with?” Blake asked harshly, and Marcus, not letting Blake’s mood deter him, smiled widely.

“Of course! Let’s go,” he replied, standing up. The three of them moved towards the exit, Luke following close behind.

“Does Luke always join you?”

“Yes, he’s responsible for my safety. Excellent at his job.”

Blake looked behind him at the tall shifter. “He could walk with us rather than behind us.” It was barely noticeable, but one side of Luke’s mouth quirked up.

Marcus made a noncommittal sound as they entered a well-manicured garden the size of a football pitch. Flowers blossomed along the edges of the large expanses of verdant green grass, and there were several patches placed around the garden that Blake recognised as vegetables, like sweet peas and tomatoes.

“What do you know of the Alliance, Blake?”

“Just that my birth parents tried to arrange one, but they were assassinated before that could happen. I wasn’t really aware of my heritage until about six months ago.”

“And that’s when you met Kayla?”

Blake didn’t like that tone from Marcus. “Yes.”

“And is she . . . more than a friend?”

“Err,” Blake began, not knowing what to say. “We’re close friends, yes.”

“That’s good, that’s good.”

Blake frowned. “I don’t see how my . . . connection with Kayla matters.” He controlled his words, not wanting to give Marcus any reason to see Kayla as a threat. Wyatt’s warning screamed in his head to watch where he treaded, but at the same time, Marcus held answers both he and Kayla were trying to find.

“It matters a great deal because the Alliance was formed by your parents and me. For our children.”

“I’m not following.” Blake looked to Imogen as she stood to the side, her face pinched.

“My daughter, Imogen, and you have been declared the shifter and magic user who will unite the bloodlines.”

“As in . . .” Blake asked, not liking where this was going at all.

“Children,” Imogen said. “Our children will have shifter blood and magic blood.”

“Will have? As in, there is no choice in the matter? The great Alliance rests on the two us having kids?”

“Your parents and I thought that by joining the bloodlines, it would create a unity that couldn’t be broken; a perfect mix of supernatural offspring.”

“You mean choosing your daughter’s future, taking away the decisions she should be making about who she loves and has children with. I can’t believe my birth parents agreed to this!”

“It’s not about her choices! It’s about her duty, and you would do well to think the same way!” Marcus argued, anger seeping into his words.

“How do you feel about this, Imogen?” Blake asked.
