Success in Avoiding Monica Wallace: Epic Fail

“You know, I kinda thought if any of us got married at an animal shelter, it would be the lesbians,” Trina said with a laugh.

“Right?” Aubrey said.

“Wait…is that offensive?”

“What?”

“Did I just insult lesbians? Did I insult you? I mean, I know you’re bi, but…” Trina looked genuinely concerned, which sent a little wave of love for her through Aubrey.

“I don’t think that was offensive at all.”

“You do love your animals.”

“You are not wrong, my friend.”

Aubrey pulled her car into a parking spot at the Junebug Farms animal shelter. Kara, the bride-to-be, worked there and had met Brad, the groom-to-be and fellow frat brother of Cody, when he came in to adopt a dog. It made sense that this was where they wanted to say their vows.

“Tell me again why you’re here with me and not Monica,” Trina said as they got out of the car. The shelter had closed early for the wedding and reception, so everybody there now was there for the nuptials.

“Because your hubby is out of town.” Trina gave her a look, so she sighed and went on. “And because we’re not ready for people to know.” She cleared her throat. “And I’m not really sure what we are yet. I’ve never been in…something…like this before.”

“Something?” Trina asked, making air quotes.

“Yeah, I…” Aubrey shook her head as she shouldered her purse and they headed toward the main building. “September was nuts. For both of us. She had two work trips, so she was gone for half the month. Emma had just started school again, and Cody was out of town almost as much as Monica was, so I’ve had Emma every weekend. And my job kicked things into high gear.”

“Is that your way of saying you haven’t had any time together?” Trina pulled the door open and held it as Aubrey walked through.

“Exactly. Which means we haven’t really talked about anything in-depth because I don’t want to do that in text. You know?”

“I do.”

“I mean, if I don’t even know what we are yet, I don’t want other people speculating what we are. I’m not cool with that. So, we decided to come separately.”

“I guess that makes sense.” Trina didn’t sound like she actually meant her own words, but Aubrey wasn’t in the mood to defend her choices. And yes, they were her choices. Monica would’ve easily come as her date, but the conversation she’d had with Cody had stuck. It had been over a month, and his words still hung out in her brain, rent-free. She’s kind of a player. She knew she needed to talk to Monica about them, but September really had been a ludicrously busy month. And now here she was, in the middle of October, with Halloween just around the corner and the holidays rocketing toward her after that, and she really needed to make some time to sit and talk.

Meanwhile, another fucking wedding.

The lobby of the animal shelter had been set up with rows of matching white folding chairs and a small arched arbor at the front.
