Chapter 11

Jonathan was feeling pretty laid-back and happy on the drive back to Fairfield Orchard, a far better frame of mind than he’d been in recently. Tyler was as excited about the cidery idea as Amy, and to see the two of them actually complete each other’s sentences as they debated what had to be done next was actually like participating in twin research. When he said as much, he was told he’d had too much to drink. So he went back to quietly petting Uma and trying not to wear too broad of a smile.

When they arrived back at the orchard warehouse, Tyler headed to the office to do some research on the equipment Carlos told them they’d need to get started.

Jonathan opened the door for Uma, then got out of the backseat and stood beside Amy to watch Tyler hurry off. “You don’t think he’ll get on a tractor or something, do you? He’s had a little too much to drink.”

“I think he’ll be fine,” Amy said, but she gave him a dubious glance. “You, on the other hand, can’t drive yourself either.”

“Whatever will I do to pass the time?” he asked softly.

He felt all hot and aroused again, just taking in her body in her tight jeans and those boots that molded to her calves. He’d been staring at her ass all day. His good intentions vanished and the primitive guy inside him took over.

She didn’t move, and her expression got all soft and dreamy. He put his hand on her cheek, then slid his fingers back through her long, sandy hair.

“I like when you wear your hair down,” he said in a husky voice.

She blinked as if trying to get herself under control. “We said this was a mistake.”

“No, we just said we were going to start thinking about dating in a few weeks.” He traced the outer curve of her ear. “On second thought, you said that.”

“And you agreed,” she insisted.

He had. But he could feel her trembling. “Right now, I can’t seem to remember why it’s a good idea.”

“This is the cider talking.” She stepped back. “Even the other night, you’d been drinking before we . . .”

He frowned. “Do you think I only want you when I’ve had something to drink?”

She didn’t answer, and she didn’t meet his eyes.

He cupped her head with both hands and gently tilted until she met his gaze. “I want you all the time, practically from the moment I saw you.”

“Practically?” she echoed in a breathless voice.

“Very well, I noticed how incredibly gorgeous you were, but I was concentrating on persuading you of the rightness of my cause.”

“Your research cause.”

He nodded.

“And what’s your cause now?”

“I don’t know. I just know that when I close my eyes at night, I still see you naked, and I can’t sleep and I want . . .”

He trailed off and kissed her, slanting his mouth over hers, going in deep as if the taste of her was what he’d been missing all his life.
