Chapter Fifteen
I don’t know what to do. Lily had run out of chocolate ice cream and was too lazy to run out and fetch more.
What a pathetic way to spend her Saturday. Watching furtively from windows, under the guise of cleaning, spying on her neighbor. She blamed him for that. Last night’s excitement had left her confused.
Do I want him? Why would I want him?
One thing she knew for sure was that being with him made her feel alive. Calvin had a way of engaging all her senses, and he knew how to kiss a girl breathless.
A kiss that shouldn’t have happened. But she had a hard time regretting it. How could she regret something that made her feel so good?
How did he make her feel so safe? The guy had a mundane job selling property. Yet, in the face of someone shooting at them last night, he’d kept his cool.
Because, according to him, he’s an assassin for hire. His fantasy world was amusing, and she would admit, he’d played well upon the trope during their date. Made her laugh too many times.
He oozed confidence, but he wasn’t a dick about it. He also flirted shamelessly. It stroked her wounded ego, healed it enough that she wondered what a true stroking by his hands would feel like.
A part of her totally wanted to see where things with him could go, but the rational part of Lily realized it as being the worst idea ever.
I’m not ready to get involved with anyone yet. The thought terrified her. She didn’t trust her judgment anymore. Look how wrong she’d been with Brock.
She needed to stay away from Calvin, any man for that matter, until she managed to figure out some things. A great plan, which didn’t explain why Lily kept watching for a glimpse of Calvin, spying so often through windows that she noticed him leaving his place wearing a suit, that crazy string tie, and his cowboy boots, briefcase in hand. His car reversed onto the road and paused for a moment in front of her house. She rolled away from the edge of the window and flattened herself against the wall.
Is he looking? Did he find himself imbued with a crazy need to see her, too? You certainly kept me awake last night. Insomnia sucked. She’d tried counting sheep, but after a while, the sheep had ended up being Calvin, running and jumping over a fence because Brock chased him.
I really should do something about my ex.
Kill him.
I can’t. If Lily got caught, then Zoe would have no one. Part of the reason why Brock had managed to hold on to her for so long was that Lily had no one. Her parents had had her late in life—early forties for her mom, fifty for her dad. By the time she hit her teen years, Dad was dead of a heart attack. Her mother followed a few years after. It left Lily alone and vulnerable. Brock seized on that.
Now, Lily paid the price.
