1. 97th Engineer Battalion (Road Construction).
2. This was the same Luftwaffe asset that had supported the division in France.
3. At the time, the official designation of the battalion was Pionier-Bataillon SS-Division Reich.
4. 1st Company of the 503rd Engineer Battalion (Bicycle), another corps asset. This formation used bicycles as its means of transport.
5. The 10th Engineer Battalion was the combat engineer battalion of the 10. Infanterie-Division (mot.), which was being held back as the corps ready reserve. For a forced river-crossing operation, the engineer battalions of the forces not immediately committed to the forced crossing were usually attached in direct support of the lead forces.
6. These are corps bridging assets.
7. A separate antitank battalion equipped with three companies of nine 4.7-centimeter self-propelled Czech-built antitank guns.
8. This was a Luftwaffe formation. It was originally an antiaircraft battalion in the Austrian military before its assimilation into the Wehrmacht after the Anschluß in 1938.
9. Flak-Regiment 11 was also the Luftwaffe antiaircraft formation in direct support of the division.
10. A separate antiaircraft battalion.
11. Artillerie-Kommando = Artillery Command.
12. From the divisional artillery of the 10. Infanterie-Division (mot.).
13. Part of a separate regiment whose battalions effectively acted as separate battalions. Apparently, the battalion had three horse-drawn heavy howitzer batteries at the start of the campaign.
14. Part of a separate regiment, whose battalions effectively acted as separate battalions. Apparently, the battalion had three heavy howitzer batteries at the start of the campaign
15. The official designation of the battalion was schwere Artillerie-Abteilung 604. It consisted of three batteries of 21-centimeter cannon.
16. Part of a separate regiment whose battalions effectively acted as separate battalions. Apparently, the battalion had three motorized 10-centimeter cannon batteries at the start of the campaign.
17. This was strictly a command-and-control entity and had no organic line battalions assigned to it.
18. In April 1942, this flash- and sound-ranging battery was consolidated with the divisional artillery of the 3. Panzer-Division and redesignated as Beobachtungs-Batterie (Panzer) 75. The Panzer in the designation indicates that the battery was issued SPW’s to help accomplish its mission when observers went up front.
19. The medium vehicle was based on the Panzer III chassis. Its turret was fixed in place and main gun removed to accommodate more radio equipment. A dummy gun was placed on the mantlet to simulate a normal Panzer III. The only close-in defensive weapons a Panzerbefehlswagen III had were the on-board machine guns. The light vehicle was based on the Panzer I chassis with the turret removed and fixed superstructure added. The latter vehicle was only used for front-line duties during the initial stages of the campaign.
20. Times given in the narrative are official German military time (corresponding to the time in Berlin) and thus two hours earlier than local Soviet time.
21. Temporary barricades usually constructed from wood and strung with barbed wire.
22. Gustav Albrecht Schmidt-Ott was one of the first recipients of the newly created German Cross in Gold on 18 October 1941. He went on to receive the Knight’s Cross of the Iron Cross on 3 October 1942 as an Oberstleutnant and acting commander of the regiment.
