CHAPTER EIGHT

The Golden Dragon

DAISY TOUCHED DOWN in an alleyway around the corner to avoid causing too much of a stir.

‘What have you got?’ asked Ash, only moments after her feet had hit the ground.

Daisy raised a gloved finger to signal her to wait. She then reached behind her back and pulled out a small, white card.

‘I finally found a use for my utility pouch,’ she said, smiling.

I took the card.

‘“Tom’s DIY Supplies”’ I read. ‘This is your clue?’

‘Yep,’ said Daisy. ‘The Ginger Ninja wanted me to find this, Leon. She practically gave it to me.’

‘What?’ I asked. ‘That doesn’t make any sense at all.’

‘Tom’s Supplies? Could be the final piece?’ said Ash, turning the card over in her hand.

‘Perhaps. Do we know for sure that Tom would sell something like a self-destruct button?’

She shrugged.

‘I dunno,’ I said. I felt really uneasy about this whole situation. ‘It could be a trap. Why else would she give you the card?’

‘If Green’s already got the button, then we’re doomed,’ said Daisy. ‘We can’t track it after it’s left the shop, so why do they want us to know this, unless-’

‘Unless Green hasn’t got it,’ said Ash, ‘and she wants you to stop him.’

There was a pause, all of us having to take in this startling revelation. I couldn’t believe that Ash was so quick to agree with Daisy. Couldn’t she see that there were serious flaws in his theory?

‘The Ginger Ninja is a very skilled fighter,’ said Ash, ‘and let’s face it, Appendix Man, you’re still starting out with all of this. No offence.’

Daisy shrugged. ‘None taken.’

‘Which means,’ Ash continued, ‘that she wanted you to leave there alive so that you could figure out a way to get to Tom’s Supplies before Green does. What’s more, I don’t think Green is the type of person who likes to give his pursuers little snippets of his plan, which would mean that she’s going behind his back, and that is a very Ginger Ninja thing to do.’

‘So,’ said Daisy, ‘she wants me to stop Green from getting the button?’

‘I’d say so,’ said Ash. ‘If she’s done a deal with Green to help him in his plan, she’s got a reason. The Ginger Ninja doesn’t work with a partner unless she’s planning to exploit them and get all of the benefits herself. I’m surprised that Green hasn’t picked up on this. It’s common knowledge.’

‘Oh yes, very common,’ I replied, sarcastically.

They ignored me.

‘So, what now?’ asked Daisy.

‘Well,’ said Ash, ‘believe it or not, Green is actually a slow operator. After the raid on the warehouse a few days ago, he’s going to need some time to plan how he’s going to get that button from Tom’s. That’s if the shop has it, of course. So, that would give us about another day or so to figure out how we’re going to get it first, but I can’t be sure how long it will be before he strikes. If we’re going to move, we’re going to have to do it fast.
