Chapter 25

Dailan’s nice romantic kiss went from tender to passionate at warp speed. I was just about to pull away and get it under control, knowing this wasn’t the time or place for that when I heard someone clearing their throat loudly. I broke free from his embrace to find a tall, handsome, gray-haired man with the most striking blue eyes standing in the doorway.

“Honestly, Dailan, have I taught you nothing? You should always lock the front door before you kiss a pretty girl in the kitchen,” the gray-haired man said with a smile. He immediately extended his hand to me “Jack O’Maley,” he said. It took a minute for me to realize that he was Dailan’s father. It was hard to make the connection at first because his father didn’t have any accent at all; then, I quickly remembered that his dad was American.

“Dad, this is Nicole Morgan,” Dailan said.

“Oh, as in ‘Miss Morgan’?”

I nodded with a smile.

“Well, my grandson is quite taken with you,” he said. “And given what I just walked in on, I’d say my son is quite taken with you too,” he added with a smile. I knew that I liked this man within the first few minutes of meeting him. He had a presence about him that immediately made me feel comfortable.

“Jack, do you think you could get the rest of the bags out for me?” a short blonde woman who had just entered the kitchen asked. “Oh, hi, I’m Annette,” she said, looking at me as if she were surprised, even as a smile stretched across her face.

“Annette, this is Nicole Morgan, as in ‘the Miss Morgan,’” Jack O’Maley said, making it sound like I was some type of celebrity.

“Oh, Miss Morgan, Ryan has told us so much about you! Oh, and I’m Jack’s wife, by the way, just in case you haven’t figured that out.”

“Nice to meet you,” I said.

She gave me another smile before giving Dailan a kiss on the cheek. “What the heck? Oh God, Dailan, please don’t tell me you were trying to cook?” she asked upon seeing the turkey still sitting on the counter.

Dailan shrugged his shoulders. “Hey, it’s not my fault that my helper here refuses to touch raw poultry.”

Dailan’s father began to laugh. “Or that the cook obviously got distracted by his beautiful helper.”

I felt myself begin to blush; I was hoping that Dailan’s father didn’t form an unfavorable opinion of me based on what he walked in on. I quickly put that thought out of my mind; he somehow didn’t seem like the judgmental type to me.

“I’ll finish this, Dailan, please stay out of the kitchen,” Annette said as she quickly began tending to the turkey.

I spent the rest of the afternoon listening to Jack O’Maley recollect on Dailan’s childhood. Some of the stories he told brought tears of laughter to my eyes, listening to all the mischief Dailan got into as a child. I was given a whole history of the O’Maley clan. Dailan’s dad met his mother when he was over in Ireland visiting family.
