10 Days Later

Luca squirmed and bucked, twisting around on the bed. Shifted into his tiger form, he was half lying on his back, half leaning against the headboard. Ethan knew Luca was in pain, but there was nothing else he could do to help besides slowly stroking his belly. Sometimes, Ethan could feel the cub moving around inside.

“Go on, baby boy,” Ethan murmured as he kept up his strokes. “Your daddy needs you out.”

Luca groaned and arched his back. Ethan couldn’t stop staring. This was the second time he saw Luca as a tiger, and he still thought Luca looked amazing. Ethan loved his golden and jet-black stripes. He watched on until at one point he stopped stroking Luca’s belly and Luca was this close to a roar as he spread on his back, exposing his full, swelling stomach. He whined a pained cry that went straight to Ethan’s heart.

“Sshhh, it’s all right. You’re getting there, honey. You’re so close.”

Luca screamed again and suddenly—there it was. Ethan gasped as he saw a small head pushed out.

“There you go, Luca. He’s coming. Come on, baby. Push. Yeah, like that. Breathe, one, two, three… Yes, push. Push, Luca! Now!”

Luca roared as he pushed hard and the baby squeezed out, a little pink wrinkled creature, and Ethan caught it, the loveliest thing Ethan had ever laid eyes on after Luca. It was a human baby and Ethan rubbed it clean and wrapped it in a blanket before pressing it against Luca’s chest. He wondered when it began to turn into a cub, and why it wasn’t in that form in the first place.

“It’s a boy,” Ethan said. Luca purred and Ethan took it as a happy sign.

Luca held his baby tight and Ethan felt a tug in his heart at the most gorgeous sight before him, a daddy tiger and his human newborn. Luca reached out a paw. Ethan caught it and squeezed it gently. Ethan smiled to see Luca’s eyes begin to droop. He’d let Luca sleep now.
