CHAPTER TWELVE

The Message

WE CARRY WITH US THE wonders we seek outside us. Thomas Browne

IT WAS DURING THE EARLY morning hours before dawn, before the birds begin to welcome the new day, in the darkest part of night, when the tossing and turning of a fitful sleep may finally give way to a deep, relaxing, dream filled sleep, when Spooks received Amberlin’s message. Because she was in the deep REM stage of sleep, the message came through loud and clear—so loud that it woke her, and for that reason she remembered the message into her waking state.

She reached under her bed and pulled out the pad of paper, the water colors and the brush she’d borrowed from the arts and craft room a few days before. She wrote down the essential part of the message before it disappeared like so many fragments of previous dreams.

She had no doubt the dream-induced message was real, and that it had come from her daughter. My daughter, she thought. Oh God, I really do have a daughter, and she’s in danger, trapped in a small room and running out of air.

Spooks painted furiously, trying to capture every important detail, but even as she wrote, she wondered how am I going to get this to someone who will believe me in time? The only person in the whole Asylum who might believe such a bizarre story might already be leaving for the day.

She didn’t know the exact time, but it felt like three or four o’clock in the morning, and Miriam’s shift ended at five. She had maybe an hour to alert Miriam, but she was locked in her room, with no one scheduled to come back until after Miriam would have already left.

She finished the message and reviewed her work:

Call Papa Herb - HELP!

It was the best she could do. No, wait. Papa Herb. That name rang a distinct bell in her memory. That’s my father. A cloudy image floated into her mind. But what was his last name...my last name?

She closed her eyes and tried to relax her mind, to allow the answer that she knew must be someone in her bank of memories to float to the surface.

GENT

What was that? Did that mean he was a gentleman or was that his last name or at least part of it? She decided to include it in her message, crammed in between “Herb” and “Help.”

Sure, the message was now clear as mud, but it was the best she could do, and time was running out. It didn’t matter how clear or unclear the message was if she couldn’t get it to Miriam before she left...but how?

Miriam might just show up before she ended her shift, but getting this message to her was far too important to count on a “might.” Spooks walked over to the door and tested it to assure herself that it was, indeed, locked tight.

She got down on her hands and knees and felt along between the bottom of the door and the floor where she found a good half to three-quarter inch gap.
