Chapter Thirteen
“Pay up, bitch.” Britt is all smiles as Tom hands a twenty over to her. His scowl is deep, but mine’s the Grand Canyon by comparison.
“You jerks actually put down money on this?” I spin around to Britt, “And you bet against me?”
She rolls her eyes. “Please. There was no way you and Cal weren’t going to get down. And if I can make money on a sure thing, then you know I’m going to. Hell, I got the idea from you and that bet you made against your cousin Jess.”
I decide to ignore the feelings of betrayal and annoyance at my friends. Mostly because if I don’t say what I’m about to say, I am going to scream bloody murder, and not just because the bet was inspired by me. That’s why I convinced Tom to open the bar, which is supposed to be closed on Sunday. As soon as Britt and I walked in, he locked the door behind us and asked why we couldn’t just hang out at a coffee house like normal people do on Sundays.
“There’s more to it all,” I sigh, “I like him too.”
“I’ll take that twenty dollars back now,” Tom says, yanking the bill out of Britt’s hand.
I look from Tom to Britt. “You guys are assholes.”
“Hey, I was placing my money on true love,” Tom tells me. At my raised eyebrow, he sighs. “Fine. I thought you were weak, okay?”
Oh God. I am weak, aren’t I? I lay my head on the bar, not even caring that the only place more disgusting to put my head in this place would be the floor.
“It’s not because I slept with him,” I point out. “I may be weak, but I know better than that.”
“Of course you do,” Britt says, and she’s being sincere. “You like him. It’s not the end of the world. He probably likes you too.”
“Probably?” I mumble. “I’m not putting my money on ‘probably’.”
“I will.” Tom laughs. “Britt, I bet you twenty bucks that Cal likes Jamie.”
“You’re on.”
“Would you stop making bets on my miserable life?” I yell, raising my head up to give them both a stern look.
Britt and Tom both mumble a pathetic apology. The look they exchange make it clear that they are still going to put money down on me and my misery.
“So, what happened when you saw him at the soup kitchen? Did you guys talk it out?” Britt asks, chewing on the straw from her drink.
“We had a small conversation, but volunteering really came first.”
“What about after?”
“You know how it is, Britt,” I say, not looking her in the eye. “You get distracted by
