Chapter Twelve

During one of his deployments Ash had been embedded. He’d been unable to move, barely able to breathe. But he had survived. He wasn’t certain he could survive being embedded with Claire Molenski—not when he would much rather be in bed with her.

But that would be a mistake. And that was why he’d stopped himself from kissing her those few nights ago. He couldn’t afford to be distracted and he knew that making love with her would distract him. He doubted he would be able to get her out of his mind and then he might miss the next tail, the next gun pointing at him out of the darkness.

He had to be careful with her safety. And with his heart.

She was getting to him with her quick wit, with her impressive intelligence and with her heartfelt sympathy. Not to mention with her soft touch and her silky lips...

Right now her hair was clipped on top of her head. She wore fleece pajama bottoms and a hooded sweatshirt. But she still looked sexy as hell to him. She didn’t even look at him. Instead, she studied her laptop screen, her face tense with dread and betrayal.

He knew why. It wasn’t because she was still searching, but because she had realized what he had before the speed dating event. He was the one to offer his sympathy now. “I’m sorry...”

“You already knew,” she said with a sigh.

“I don’t know who,” he said. “Just that someone at your company is behind the information auction.” The access being offered for sale was for clients of only Nowak Computer Consulting, so only an employee of Nowak would know who all those clients were.

“You thought it was me.”

He nodded.

“I don’t blame you,” she said with another sigh. “I would think it’s me, too.”

“You would rather think it’s you,” he said. After all the time he’d spent with her, he was beginning to know her character well. “You don’t want to believe that someone you work with would betray your company and your country.”

She sighed. “No, I don’t.”

“It could have been someone that you once worked with that still has access.”

“Leslie?”

She didn’t sound as certain of his innocence as she’d been before. But now he wasn’t as certain of Morrison’s guilt, either. “He was interrogated.”

“And?”

He shrugged. “We can neither confirm nor deny whether or not Leslie Morrison is a suspect.”

She snorted. “Sometimes you’re such a suit.”

He wasn’t wearing one now. Like her he had opted for casual, but jeans and a button-down shirt were as casual as he got while on the job. Unless he was undercover...

“If we’re going to confirm or deny,” he said, “I need to get in a suit again. I need to do some investigating of my own.”

Instead of relying on someone else to interrogate a suspect, he needed to be doing the interrogating himself. But if he’d interrogated Morrison, he would have blown his cover.

Her shoulders and back straightening, she tensed. “Are you handing me off to another agent?”

He tensed, too, at the thought of trusting her protection to someone else.
