Chapter 10

Ardad was bent over an order of spare ribs and french fries at his usual place outside Joe’s Barbecue when he saw Russell coming toward him. He picked up his plate to ward off Russell’s threats of tortuous prison life and eternal damnation for all his evil wrongdoings. Ardad believed him.

“Hey, Ardad, what’s happening, man? Just thought I’d stop by and pay my old friend a visit.” Russell knew Ardad had sold drugs, mostly marijuana and cocaine, and suspected he was being used by some other people to distribute them. Whenever Russell arrested him, his lawyer would post his bail, and when it came time for his trial Ardad would beat the charges and be out on the streets again. When Russell wanted information, he always called on Ardad.

“I ain’t got nothing to talk to you about. Just go away and leave me alone.” Ardad tried to leave, but Russell stepped in front of him, blocking the way.

“Don’t let me interrupt you. Sit down and finish your supper, Ardad. I’m just paying you a friendly visit.” Ardad knew not to get Russell angry. Whenever Russell began talking about the Devil and how he was using Ardad to do evil and predicting that he was going to hell, the big man would start shaking.

“What do you want with me?” Ardad asked him, bits of food flying everywhere.

“I have a friend I’m trying to contact, and I thought you might be able to help me locate him. His name is Marcus Henderson. You know anything about him?”

“Yeah, I know him,” Ardad replied, swallowing hard. “What’s he doing now? I saw him last week. You used to work with him at the police station or something?” he asked cautiously.

“You could say that we were in the same business together.”

“You looking for a new job, too? He says he’s going to hire me when he has an opening at that security office. He’s a very important man now. More important than when he was a cop. Now he has time to do things, and he says he’s going to find something for me to do. You want me to tell him you interested?”

“What exactly does he do at that office, Ardad?” Russell prompted.

“I don’t know, but he says he’s meeting a lot of people down in Colombia and he will be needing a strong bodyguard like me soon,” Ardad answered.

“Do you know a guy named Bacrandi? Who’s he?”

“Bacco, that’s the Lieutenant’s main man. He plans things,” Ardad added proudly.

“Things? Like what?”

Ardad stood up abruptly, knocking over his chair.

“I don’t like your questions. If you want to know more, you better ask him yourself.”

“Maybe I will. Where can I find this Bacrandi guy?”

“At the security office—2304 Macpherson Blvd.”

“Donovan, you’ve arrived just in time. The doctor says I can go home now.”

“That’s great. I’m ready for you to come home. Thank you, doctor, for all your help.” Donovan extended his hand to the physician, but only received a cold look from him.

“I’ll leave some instructions for you at the nurse’s station.
