Chapter Nine

Lany

I hated this crap.

No matter how careful I was or how hard I tried, it always seemed to happen. Maybe Sal was right about his hermetically sealed room. At least then I wouldn't be able to attract any secret admirers.

The only man I wanted lusting after me was Sal.

I stretched my legs out and wiggled my toes. I'd been curled up in the corner of the couch for what seemed like forever. The kids had long ago been taken upstairs by Jenna.

Well, except TJ and Jamie. They had wanted to stay, and Sal felt it was time they learned how to deal with the crazy-ass shit that happened to our family. I wasn't sure I agreed, but it wasn't worth the argument with Sal right now.

We had bigger things to worry about.

I glanced up when I heard the front door open. A moment later, the members of Sal's SWAT unit walked in. I smiled when Lyn hurried right over and sat down next to me. "Hey."

"Secret admirer?" Lyn asked. "Really?"

I think I was slightly insulted.

"What?" I asked. "You don't think I could have one?"

"You do remember who you're married to, right?"

I grimaced. "Good point."

Anyone who looked at Sal would instantly see how absurd it was to even think I'd look at another man. Assuming the flowers were from a man.

"Do you think a woman could have sent these?"

Lyn shrugged. "I suppose anything is possible."

I thought back over the last couple of months. The only woman I could remember meeting was Milla Zachery, and she was in jail awaiting trial for shooting me, kidnapping, assault, and a host of other nasty deeds. I doubted the flowers came from her.

Which led me back to the men I'd met recently. There just weren't that many. Most of my time was taken up with the kids and Sal, and my friends. I didn't have a lot to spare for other people. I was kind of at my quota.

"The only person who really stands out for me is Turk."

Lyn lifted an eyebrow. "Turk?"

"Yeah, remember when I had to go for help for Sal after he got hurt?"

Lyn nodded.

"I ended up at some biker bar a few miles away. When I asked for a phone, this guy Turk stepped up. He offered to let me use his cell phone if I blew him."

Lyn burst out laughing.

"I know right?" I shook my head. "He was really insistent, too, kept grabbing me and shit. When Burke intervened, Turk started demanding a blow job like I had promised him one or something."

"Do you think this was him?"

"I don't know. Burke doesn't seem to think so, and he knows Turk pretty well from his undercover work."

"Is all of this a little overkill?" Lyn waved his hand out over the living room, which had become a command center since Sal couldn't really get comfortable in his office. "So someone sent you roses and a love note. So what? Why is everyone freaking?" Lyn snorted. "I should be so lucky."

"Problems with the boyfriend?"

I had yet to meet the man.
