CHAPTER FOURTEEN

When everything seems good, but it really isn’t.

I stare at my phone with tears pricking the back of my eyes. Hold it together, Kasi. “Hold on.”

After running to the bathroom to take a couple deep breaths, then washing my face with cold water, I blow my nose and walk back to the living room, and pick up the phone, Declan’s smirking face transmitting through. “You’re not messing with me, right?”

He shakes his head and almost smiles. “I wouldn’t mess with you about something this important, Kas.”

“Wow, I’m just…shocked.”

“Ouch. It’s almost as though you didn’t believe in me.”

I frown because although I’m deliriously happy, he’s right. I didn’t a hundred percent believe he’d follow through. “Sorry, my bad.”

“It’s okay. I don’t blame you.”

“But, on another note, oh my gosh, I’m so damn excited, Dec. For me and the film, but most of all for you.”

“I’m pretty excited myself.”

“Tell me everything.”

He actually smiles, the corners of his eyes crinkling, and his eyes sparkling with excitement. “We’ve been prepping for the show’s visit this weekend. It’ll mostly be business as usual, but also figuring out how to keep Dad out of the way while they shoot B-roll footage.”

“Right, you mentioned.”

“Yeah. Thankfully we have Ryan because she’s been running interference and has figured out how to keep Dad out of the restaurant Saturday. By the way, Weston definitely has a crush.”

“Whoa, really? I thought no fraternization.”

“Definitely not. I don’t think she even realizes.”

“Oh, interesting. Okay, enough of that. Get to the good stuff.”

Declan leans over out of view, but when he comes back, his face is alight with delight. “You are the worst.”

“I know. But still, get on with what I’m interested in.”

“So the three of us were in one of our back rooms early this morning, basically choreographing how everything would go, when Knox told us he got a new job.”

Wait, what? I blink my way into understanding. Or at least try to because I don’t quite grasp what he means.

“I can see by the expression on your face that I’ve thrown you off your game.”

“What the actual fuck, Dec? You could have led with that.”

“I have to keep you on your toes, Kas.”

“Knox quit?”

“Not officially yet, but Ryan knows so she’s preparing to lose him. That’s a huge loss and you could tell by her demeanor that she wasn’t happy about it, but she’s the utmost professional so she didn’t say anything other than she’d start looking for a replacement who would satisfy Dad.”

“I can’t imagine that’s an easy task.”

Declan snorts, then widens his eyes. “No, not at all, but if anyone can do it, Ryan can.” He’s somber for a moment, then shakes himself, and rolls his shoulders. “I told her while she was looking, maybe find two. You should have seen the surprised eyes swinging my way. Weston nearly fell out of his chair.”

“I can only imagine. Then what happened?” I’m anxious to hear how Knox handled this revelation.

“Then I said I think I’ve found a different calling. Something that I enjoy much more, and maybe have a more natural talent for.
