Chapter 17 - Back to Work

Bowie was awakened by a swift kick to his boot. He opened his eyes to the sunlight from a nearby window being cast around the room as it reflected off the dust stirred up by the kick. Standing over him was Patty, one of Auburn’s troops, staring down at him.

“She says to get up. You have work to do,” Patty said before departing.

Bowie grunted and sat upon the straw-covered floor of his old barracks. He looked over to his bow that hung in the same spot it had when he first arrived in Deuterium. Rolling over off the blanket-covered straw he heard the floor shift under his foot, in his curiosity pulled up the loose floorboard. Inside a small cubby, he found the five gold pieces he stored for emergencies. He placed them in his satchel he pulled on his coat and a new hat.

Standing in the stall doubling as his room, he looked down the repurposed stable hallway and saw a set of women’s boots in each room like a stall. They were all neatly placed at the entrance to the open room and the peg nearest them rested a red hat. He cursed under his breath as he was supposed to have the entire barracks to himself. He should’ve known Auburn would send her guard to fill every empty stall. Grabbing his bow and quiver he walked out the door, letting it slam behind him.

Patty, the largest of Auburn’s guards, shouted at him, “Just because you don’t like us doesn’t mean you have to disrespect us! The women in there were watching the walls and the street while you slept half the day away.”

Bowie turned around and tipped his hat while walking backward, “My apologies.”

When he turned back he caught sight of Auburn coming towards him with a cloth covering a plate in her hands. His stomach growled and he was thankful she remembered to save him something from breakfast.

“Is that for me?” he wanted to at least wait for her to say yes before taking the plate right from her hands.

She smiled, “Of course. After all, we can’t have you teaching on an empty stomach.”

Bowie took the plate but almost dropped it because he was surprised by the weight of it. Auburn kept walking towards the training ranges. He followed while pulling back the cloth of the plate to find an orange cut in half.

“This is all you saved me?”

“It’s more than you deserve for sleeping half the day.”

Bowie handed the plate to a small boy walking by with a sack of kindling, “You could have at least saved me an egg. Now that I know this is all I get I think I should go back to sleep till lunch.”

Auburn stopped by some tables near the archery range where women were hard at work making arrows. She picked one up and examined it before pointing out areas for improvements and handing the arrow back to the guard.

“There were only a dozen eggs today and the army only got half.
