I’d come out young, without a lot of fanfare, because I was one of those guys whose family insists at every turn: “I always knew he was gay.” And then usually follows the proclamation with some example from the stereotype handbook: “He played with dolls,” or “he wore Mom’s heels,”

or “he enjoyed musicals from a young age,” or whatever.

That was nothing like Isaac’s reality. The man gave new meaning to the word “butch.” He’d grown up being a star athlete. Nobody expected Isaac Jones to be gay, and I could see where that would make it even harder to accept it for himself. But understanding what he’d gone through didn’t change what he’d put me through. Neither did my new realization that he could be incredibly sweet and tender.

I lay down on his chest and held on just a little bit tighter.

“Rafi?” he whispered to me.

“Yeah.”

He engulfed me in his arms again. “Do you think you can forgive me for what I did back then?” There was so much hope in his voice. “Do you think we can start fresh?”

I sighed deeply and answered truthfully. “I don’t know, Isaac. I just don’t know.”
