CHAPTER THIRTY-FIVE
___________
âIf you donât mind, Your Majesty, Iâd like to ask for a leave this afternoon,â said Councilor Urissil.
Eresthas rhythmically tapped his fingertips together, arms resting on the long table in the receiving room. âYou took one a couple of days ago.â
âI worked without rest for so many years, sire. At my advanced age, you understand⦠There are temporary⦠circumstances, you see.â
Ruz kept his face impassive, but he wondered how Eresthas could understand what Urissil could barely explain. He glanced at Oderet for wisdom, but the royal guard twitched his shoulders in a discreet shrug.
âYouâll miss the discussion about Nefaliaâs taxes under their current legal status,â the king said.
âIâm sure I wonât be needed, sire.â
âIf youâre not needed when discussing Nefalia, were you ever needed?â
The old manâs eyes grew round. His knees started quaking like twigs on a windy day.
âTomorrow morning the discussion will be about this yearâs midsummer festival,â Eresthas said. âA lighter, non-strategic topic. Would that work for you?â
A wet smile, missing most of its teeth, pleated Urissilâs face. âThat will be wonderful, sire. Iâll remember your kindness.â After a swaying bow, he shuffled out. Oderet escorted him, hovering close as if Urissil might crumple at any moment.
Ruz rolled his stiff shoulders. âIâd congratulate you on your successful attempt at kindness, but your âwere you ever neededâ evens it out to neutral.â
A wry smile tugged at the corner of Eresthasâs lips. âIâm trying, all right?â
âA most laudable effort, sire,â Ruz said pompously before dropping his voice. âYou could try harder.â
Eresthasâs amends-making hadnât ended with Ruz. The king reasoned that his future killer probably had the support of the many people who despised him. As such, improving his image was the lowest hanging fruit to overturn his fate.
âItâs too early.â Eresthas rubbed between his eyebrows. âIâm still warming up.â
âIâm looking forward to your noon performance, then.â
âNoon? Iâll be exhausted by then,â he moaned.
âLow endurance?â
âTsk.â He slid down the armchair until he was almost falling off the edge. âEasy for you to say because you donât know what Urissil wants to use his day off for. Talking to Silephele. For the third time.â
Ruzâs brows arched. âOracles are addictive after all?â
He knew that Pharris had been a regular at Silephele, but he was actively fighting his fate. Likewise, Ruz had overheard nobles around the palace dropping her name and hinting at her prophecies, but heâd assumed it was just a fad. What if it was more?
âOf course,â Eresthas said. âEspecially for old men wobbling on the tightrope of life.â
âHeâs on the verge of death? He looked frail, but not sickly.â
âThe problem with natural death is that itâs infinitely more difficult to avert it than an assassination. Once you learn youâll die in a year, or five years, what can you do?â
âI suppose that being glad I enjoyed my life to its maximum span is not the correct answer.â
âNot if you feel itâs too early. Then youâll try exercising more. Or less. Youâll drink tonics. Then potions. Eat nothing but honey for a month.
