Chapter Eleven

Karissa

We made it to pack home, and I went straight to Danni’s side. She was sprawled out on the ground outside. My uncle hadn’t provided her any comfort and failed to heal her from the wolfsbane in her system.

I dropped to her side and tears fell with me. My hands shook and I found myself bending over her unconscious body, pressing my lips against her forehead.

“Help her,” I pleaded. If it had been me in danger, I wouldn’t have begged but I couldn’t lose her. Despite all the emotional distance I wanted between us to prevent myself from feeling this agony, I'd still found my heart and soul tangled with hers. She was mine. My mate. I needed her. My wolf couldn’t survive without her.

My uncle enjoyed my groveling. He’d waited years for this moment. To see me break. Where he took satisfaction, I saw sadness. We were blood and had once been close. But his greed about being Alpha had been the knife that tore us apart.

Everyone stood behind their Alpha, a mix of emotions. Most carried sadness for me, while a few that were loyal to my uncle were pleased to see me weakened. My eyes shifted to my brother. He wanted to help me but would always be loyal despite his personal feelings. He hated my uncle just as much as I did, but would never go against him as long as he was Alpha. As for Jenkins, I watched him struggle to act too but he’d be foolish to speak on my behalf. My uncle would punish him severely if he tried.

I would not hate him for it. I would not hate any of them.

Who surprised me was my auntie. She rushed out of the house, alarmed by what was occurring.

“She is your niece and that is her mate. Help her,” my auntie begged.

Back under full control, I revisited every law I’d memorized. My uncle was Alpha, but he never took the time to truly read every passage written. But as Sentinel it was my duty to know which laws to enforce.

It was Dean who helped me remember. His smile was slight but easy for me to see. He wanted me to figure it out.

My eyes widened and I let out a breath before speaking quickly. I’d found my freedom to live another day.

“No human shall be struck, maimed, and or killed by such wolf for any reason, as it is written under wolf law, title 20.71.” My uncle’s incredulous gaze brought out the confidence needed. I sat tall on my knees, my hand holding Danni’s. If she didn’t shift in the next half hour, she’d be dead. I wouldn’t allow that to happen.

I looked to my uncle and continued. “Should such a time be permitted that a wolf uses deadly force, not only must a human be fully cognitive of our existence but intent on causing bodily harm to one's mate or cub. For any other wolf outside that notation should capture and imprison until council has given permission to kill or set human free with harsh punishment.
