CHAPTER FOURTEEN

IT WAS LOVELY TO SIT beneath the willow tree and dangle her feet in the water. Her harp lay next to her, but Meryl didn’t pick it up right away. Insead she listened to the melody of the stream. For the first time in days there was nothing she had to do, and she was determined to enjoy it.

It wasn’t long, however, before her fingertips began to itch for the harp strings. She picked up the instrument and began to tune it, humming the pitches happily and taking her time with the whole process. Finally she began to pluck out a tune, and she found herself singing the cat song she had written for Pedr. That reminded her of the tree song she had started and never finished, which in turn made her think of Halstatt sitting alone under his oak. “Well, not alone,” she corrected herself. “The trees are probably the best company he’s had in weeks. No doubt he’s as happy as a pig in mud.” The thought made her a bit sad, because she found herself actually missing the draoi, ponderous speeches and all.

She went back to her tree song with a determined effort, but nothing seemed to work. Finally she dropped her harp in her lap and glared at the branches of the willow above her. “What’s your story?” she demanded of the tree. “How can I write a song if I haven’t got a clue what to say?”

“An excellent question,” said a voice from behind her.

Meryl leaped up and spun around. “Hello?” she quavered. She was struck with the horrifying thought that she had stumbled upon a second draoi.

“An excellent question,” the voice repeated. “Though one can’t help but wonder who it was directed towards.”
