“Sweetheart, I haven’t seen you smile like this since your daddy built you that dollhouse for your tenth birthday. I don’t think you could wipe the grin off your face if you tried.”

Remi pursed her lips as she glanced at her mother sitting next to her at the counter of Chatelaine’s Tumbleweed Diner. She also felt her mouth twitch at the edges. “It’s been a good week,” she said. “Sales were up in my department by almost twenty percent thanks to the new movie that just came out based on that book series. Although—”

“I know.” Stella held up a hand. “Books are always better than the movie version. I don’t think that’s the only reason.” She pointed at Remi. “You’re grinning again.”

“It’s the pancakes,” Remi said, shrugging. “Pancakes make me happy. Did I tell you about the pancakes we had at the hotel? They were as light as cotton candy, Mom.”

“You told me about that and riding the Ferris wheel on the boardwalk and the private tour guide at the amusement park. It sounds like quite the weekend away for two young people.”

“It was amazing,” Remi agreed, then quickly added, “but we’re just friends.”

Her mother lifted a brow. “You keep saying that. It’s almost like you’re trying to convince yourself more than you’re trying to convince me.”

Remi bit down on her lower lip. She didn’t like lying to her mother. She knew that Stella had a romantic heart. If she had any idea what had transpired between Remi and Linc, she’d be picking out wedding dresses before too long.

“I’m just saying he picked you to go on the trip, and I’m sure there were plenty of friends—” her mom made exaggerated air quotes around that last word “—who would have been happy to join him. I’m also saying that Linc might be the reason for your smile, not book sales.”

“I love my job,” Remi said primly.

“Sweetheart, you have to know when to fold them. I’m your mama, and I can read your game face like it’s my job. It has been my job for a lot of years.”

Stella glanced at the watch encircling her wrist. “I’ve got to get back to the office.”

“Thanks for meeting me for lunch, Mom. I’ll see you later tonight.” Remi hugged her mother and then took another forkful of pancake as Stella walked away. “So good and needs more syrup,” she murmured to herself and grabbed the little jar on the counter.

“Pancakes for lunch. That’s an interesting selection,” a voice said next to her. She turned to see an older man with a gray beard and a bulky cable-knit sweater, making himself more comfortable on the stool next to her.

“It’s an acquired taste, but if you’re looking for the perfect mix of carbs and sugar, you can’t go wrong.”

“I didn’t know there was a perfect mix. I hope you don’t mind that I overheard you and your mother’s conversation.”

“I don’t mind,” Remi said. “I’d like to believe there are secrets in Chatelaine, but I don’t know anyone who can keep one.
