13. Back at the farm

Kala and I are on the road again. I’m driving. We’ve been talking about Anita and Leroy.

“Teague’s comments were interesting,” I say.

“Yeah, that surprised me, too.”

“We’ll have to ask Dana about it. And Rachus was bit odd. She kept staring at us.”

“I think I can explain that one,” offers Kala. “She wasn’t staring at us. She was staring at you. I think she likes you.”

“Really?”

“What thirteen-year-old girl wouldn’t like you? You’re a good-looking man. And you’ve raided Norden, escaped from the Dream Patrol, and you might just save the entire wheat crop. You look like a hero!”

“That’s ridiculous. Besides, it was as much you as it was me.”

“It’s not ridiculous to a thirteen-year-old girl.”

“Or me,” adds Kala, putting her hand on my leg, smiling and fluttering her eyelids.

“Well, thanks for that!” I say.

I’m not sure what to make of all that. Kala seems serious. I shake my head. “Hopefully Rachus will meet someone her own age.”

We’re welcomed at Seamus’ house by Spike barking and wagging his tail. I park just outside the shed.

“Yer drivin’ better than ya did when ya left,” says a rough-looking Seamus, sidling up to the car.

“Thanks for loaning us your car, Seamus,” I say. “My grandfather says it’s a classic.”

“That it is,” replies Seamus, slowly, admiring the old car. “Well, how’d ya go, then? Did you get the book you were after?”

“Yes, here it is,” I say, showing him the book.

“And we brought back a treatment to try on the rust,” adds Kala.

“We’re not sure it will work, though,” I say.

“What’s ya treatment?”

“The book says sulphur based fungicide,” I answer. “But we couldn’t get any of that, so we’re trying water from the hot spring. We’re guessing it has sulphur in it.”

“From that spring near Norden?”

“Yes, you know it?”

“I had meself a few dalliances there back in the old times.”

I’m not sure what a dalliance is, but I am amazed that he’s been to the hot spring. It’s hard to imagine Seamus being far away from his farm … although he does have his car. I suppose he could have gone anywhere he wanted.

“What’s a dalliance?” I ask.

“It’s just a bit of a swim, a drink and what not.”

“Oh, well, we had a dalliance down at the spring then,” says Kala earnestly.

“Well good luck to ya,” says Seamus, giving us a wink in the same way Grandpata did.

“Seems like there was a lot of dalliancing in the old times,” I say, returning his wink.

“That there was. They was good times,” says Seamus, giving us a slight grin.

“Anyway,” I say. “Thanks again for the loan of the car.”

“Any time ya want it, ya can ‘ave it.”

“Thanks. We might need to go back for more spring water in a week or two.”

“Sure,” he says. “I might come with ya.”

“Sure,” I say as we start walking towards our house, although I’m wondering what it would be like to be on a long journey with Seamus. Maybe it would be okay, I decide. He seems to have warmed to us.
