CHAPTER FIFTEEN

The two couples stood at the front of the restaurant in stunned silence. What were the odds they would be at the same restaurant, at the same time? Vince and Lauren held each other’s hand in support while they visually evaluated their former spouses. Theo was roughly the same height as Vince was; however, he appeared a little more muscular through his tailored suit and tie. His gray hair was combed back, and his eyes were steel blue in color. His companion, Carolyn, wore her blonde hair up, a style Vince despised when they were together, but the drummer couldn’t object to it anymore. Carolyn’s red dress was accompanied with a wide gold necklace and small gold-hoop earrings. Like Theo, Carolyn’s blue eyes felt like they were shooting venomous darts at the musical couple. The hostess came by, and said, “Your table is ready now, Mr. Cloverdale.” With the announcement, Theo and Carolyn headed to their table, but gave Lauren and Vince one final death stare before being led into the restaurant. The musical couple quickly left the establishment soon after, and hurried to Vince’s car.

“Well, that was awkward,” Vince observed, as he climbed into the vehicle.

Lauren closed the passenger door behind her. “Gee, you think?” she quipped. “Why did he have to show up tonight of all nights?”

“Not only that,” the drummer retorted, “why did he show up with her?”

“It’s obvious they’re trying to get into our heads,” the saxophonist noted. “They certainly didn’t look too pleased with us.”

“I know Theo didn’t,” Vince commented. “But, Carolyn seemed jealous, too. I don’t know why they would, though. They both left us in the first place.”

“Misery loves company, I guess,” Lauren pondered. “They probably wanted to find strength in each other as former spouses of addicts.”

“Still, though,” Vince countered, “don’t you think it was a little too convenient for them to be together, and show up to the same restaurant, the same night we went?”

“Are you suggesting the ambush was planned?” Lauren queried.

“I’m not one for conspiracy theories,” the drummer mused. “But, it just appeared to be a little ironic. Let’s consider the facts: Cal told us Theo was seeing someone new, and our smooch at Riverside was broadcast on television, and in the arena. The only factor that could throw my theory out the window is if Theo and Carolyn were dating before we became a couple, and the two of them are pissed off because they believe we hooked up out of spite.”

“But, they didn’t know we would,” the saxophonist argued. “Hell, we didn’t even know they were together until tonight.”

“You know that, and I know that,” Vince stated. “But, they might have believed otherwise.” The drummer sighed in frustration. “I’m sorry tonight didn’t turn out the way we hoped. I should have known Carolyn might go back to the same place her and I enjoyed all those years ago.”

Lauren took Vince’s hand into hers. “Vince, honey,” she soothed, “there was no guarantee she would have shown up tonight.
