Chapter Four
I was sitting next to Richard at the dining room table that had quickly become our base of operations. Preston was still pacing back and forth anxiously looking at the clock on the wall every ten minutes.
“She’s been gone for twenty four hours,” he said and exhaled sharply, “she must be terrified. I hope she knows we’re going to find her.”
“She must,” I told him and watched Richard do his magic. He’d finally gotten an associate to hack into the traffic cameras around the city and we were tracking the progress of the van that took our beautiful girl.
I just hoped Paige would be able to forgive us for leaving her alone, for letting her get taken. I should have beefed up security and had a guard at the gate once I knew she wanted to stay home. I should have never left her by herself, my father never would have. He was naturally suspicious of everyone, and I should have carried that sentiment out instead of becoming complacent with cameras alone.
In my heart I knew it was the nature of our relationship that lead to us getting rid of the security staff.
The fewer people around to judge us, the better. But after today, I didn’t give a flying fuck who knew that I loved Paige and I shared her with my brother, Preston. Fuck them all if they didn’t like it, there was nothing that would make me hide my love once we got our baby girl back home.
I glanced at Preston and he was standing behind Richard watching the laptop screen like a hawk.
It was strange really, when you thought about it. All through high school we’d competed for the same girls, but had always walked away when our brother won their attention. We’d never even shared sloppy seconds, as we’d called them. The moment our brother marked a girl as his, the other would back off.
Paige was so different though. I’d wanted her for years, but had never known how to handle it, so I’d been a grade A prick to her. Preston had been the same, and our feelings had never been addressed.
Shortly before our parents died, we’d gotten totally blasted drunk at a friend’s party and I’d confessed my feelings to Preston after dumping some girl or another for only one reason. That she wasn’t Paige. He’d looked at me with shock and I’d braced myself for a lecture about her being our stepsister and being off limits.
Instead he’d laughed heartily and confessed his own secret obsession over our gorgeous little sister.
We’d talked about it later when we were sober and decided we could never compete for her, it was all or nothing and it was all up to her. After our parents died, we realized that she was the only family we had left, and if we didn’t try to keep her close, she’d drift away and our chance would be lost.
“I got something,” Richard said and I leaned closer. He pointed at the screen and said, “This is over on Magnuson Avenue, in the old industrial district.
