Turning restlessly for the twentieth time, her mind
still picking like a carrion crow at the scraps of the
day, her hand came to rest upon her hip where another
hand had been lying in wait for precisely such a mo-
ment. She realised then that she had slept and that
the dream had returned to share in her loneliness, that
she had no idea how long it had been with her, and
that, if she asked no questions of it, there would be
nothing to explain after its departure. In some distant
brightly lit time, a part of her sang with joy before
the darkness enfolded her, drawing her senses towards
the hand on its slow and languorous journey over
smooth hip and satin breast.
The body that had been curbed and controlled for
so long came instantly alive, quivering with yearn-
ings, aching with emptiness and the demands of grief.
He was there, vital and eager, pressing against her
and pulling her under him, and she was ready and
willing to be possessed and drowned in his loving, to
take in all of him in a frenzy of release that blinded
all objections with its suddenness. The restraints of
the day fell apart, and she clung to him for support.
As if it had anticipated her reaction and prepared
for it, the dream was a match for her in every sense.
His mouth, locked on hers, drew forth her cries of
desire and followed the path of her lips as they for-
aged for his breath, for the attention that would banish
the turmoil in her mind. She set the pace, and he
responded by taking control, slipping a thick arm be-
neath her back to swing her off the pillows, lifting
her beautiful breasts towards his waiting mouth. Like
a greedy infant, he tugged at her nipples with his lips
and tongue.
One ecstatic cry signalled her urgency, and there

was no more delay before her legs parted and he was
between them, entering her easily as if he had been
doing so nightly for years, yet with the heartstopping
excitement of a first time. Her cry took on another
meaning as her hand caught at his wrist where he
guided himself into her, too late to stop the entry but
firm enough to convey her apprehension. This was the
first time for her in over three years, the dream must
realise. Was it something one could forget how to do?
He waited, allowing himself to be held back. ‘It’s
all right,’ he whispered, breaking the rule of silence.
‘I know...I know. It’s all right.’ His wrist brought her
hand away as he eased himself further inside, slowly
dilating her and sending a shudder of bliss through
the perfect body that must now relearn how to give
and receive. Again, he waited, seeking her lips with
his to complete a circuit of sensations that linked
mind and body, cleverly, masterly, magically. His
kiss held and softened her, steadying her lungs, and
he began to move gently, rhythmically, reminding her
of the tender beat of a man’s loins and the breathtak-
ing rippling invasion that brought new life throbbing
into her emptiness.
She tried to remember and to compare, to assure
herself that this was how it had been before, yet each
slow and powerful thrust
