Eight minutes later, Lizzie was ringing Jack’s doorbell. She took a step backward and waited while Jack peered at her through the peephole. She waved like an idiot.

“Kind of late for a social call, isn’t it, Counselor?” Jack asked, stepping back to allow her to enter.

“One should never assume or presume, Jack. Ask yourself why I would be paying you a social call at this hour of the night. This is strictly business. Bet you didn’t even know it was raining outside.”

She wondered why she had said that. Was it because she was always uncomfortable in Jack Emery’s presence? Did she harbor secret feelings for the deputy district attorney? She laughed inwardly at the absurd thought. Maybe it was because, intellectually, he was her match. And he was just as clever and devious as she was. In a courtroom they were like snapping, snarling wildcats. Even the judges couldn’t believe the two of them, and constantly reprimanded them. Once, several years ago, a judge had slapped them both in jail for twenty-four hours and fined them each five thousand dollars. Jack had bought her a drink when they got out of jail. She respected Jack Emery more than she did any other person in the world. Maybe she felt inferior to Jack in some cockamamie way. Yeah, yeah, that had to be it.

“So, you want a beer, some mac and cheese? What?”

“No to the food, yes to the beer.” She couldn’t resist the urge to let loose with, “Georgetown, we have a problem.”

“Well, shit, it took you long enough to spit it out. C’mon out to the kitchen and make the rest of my night miserable. What’d you do to your hair? You look…”

“Like shit?” Lizzie reached up and yanked off the chestnut-brown wig. Her crop of silvery hair fell in tight ringlets to her shoulders. She shook it loose, then scratched at her head. “I was in disguise tonight.”

“You’re gonna tell me why, right? And, no, I didn’t know it was raining outside. Not that I really care.”

“I had a meeting at a coffee joint in southwest Washington with Martine Connor and Pamela Lock. You want to hear the details?”

Jack popped two bottles of Budweiser and handed one to Lizzie. When she looked at him questioningly, he said, “Dishwasher’s on the fritz. I hate doing dishes, so drink it out of the bottle. If it’s good enough for me it’s good enough for you. Spit it out, Counselor.”

“Neither one knew that the RNC’s donor list was heisted. They thought the RNC had lifted theirs. I clued them in. By the way, they called the meeting. All three of us agreed it looks like some kind of setup. As you know, I did legal work for both Martine and Pam for years. I think it’s safe to say we’re friends. I trust them, and they trust me. The reason for the meet was to ask me to get in touch with the vigilantes because they want to hire them to get to the bottom of this mess.
