THE SIEGE OF KHE SANH

Khe Sanh was a U.S. Marine Corps base and airstrip located close to the Laos–South Vietnam border, south of the DMZ. Its location allowed troops to gather intelligence on traffic on the Ho Chi Minh Trail just inside the Laotian border, and to be a threat to operations in the immediate area. At the same time, its remote position made it difficult to reinforce or resupply if it were attacked and surrounded by a determined enemy.

QUICK FACTS

• Part of the marine defense at Khe Sanh included the use of listening posts. These were predetermined locations outside the barbed-wire perimeter, where two or three marines would hide. Their mission was to alert the base of any enemy movement in their area and then quickly return to base before the enemy found and surrounded them.

• President Johnson became so concerned about the marines’ situation at Khe Sanh during the siege that he ordered hourly reports sent to him. He also had a large model replica of the marine base at Khe Sanh set up in the White House map room.
