Morning felt like the dawning of a new day. There was a sense of peace surrounding the bedroom as Evan slept comfortably in the bed with Sara laying in his arms. He rolled to his side to face her, and stared at Sara’s kissable lips. Restraining himself was torturous and unnecessary. He was home, and there was nothing to stop him from doing what he wanted. Brushing the tendrils of hair from Sara’s face, Evan edged closer until his lips fit perfectly on hers.

Then, almost as if on cue, Evan’s phone rang violently from his jeans. There were only a handful of people that would call him that early. Two of which had a scheduled meeting to discuss his future. Believing it could be one of them, Evan slid out from the covers and crept towards his jeans. Fumbling for the phone, he caught sight of the name displayed on the screen.

“Ma, now’s not really a good time.”

“I’m sorry. I just wanted to see how the tour went.”

Went? How did she know the tour was over? “It went really well.” Evan kept his voice to a whisper as he slipped on a pair of boxers and exited the bedroom. “How’d you know the tour was over?”

“I talked to Sara on the phone yesterday. She said she was on her way back to the apartment to meet you. Why didn’t you tell us you were coming home?”

Maybe it’s because I haven’t talked to you since I left that miserable house, he thought. “I wanted to surprise Sara.”

“Well, I would say you did a good job of it. That girl seemed beyond nervous to see you.”

“Yeah, I was excited to see her too.”

“Well, I won’t keep you long. I just wanted to say welcome home, and invite you both for dinner tonight.”

The last dinner he and Sara spent with them had been a disaster. They fawned over Sara while continuing to put Evan and his dreams of being a famous author down.

“Sorry ma; I don’t think we can make it.”

“Please, I promise it’ll be different than the last time.”

Evan was shocked to hear her admit the inappropriateness of their last dinner. “You almost scared Sara away last time.”

“Scare her off? We happen to think very highly of Sara. We think she’s a great catch. You couldn’t find anyone better than her.”

Letting her words sink in, Evan knew his mother’s last comment was another dig at his self-esteem. It was a backhanded compliment. On one hand she said Sara was the perfect woman for him. On the other hand, she implied he could never find another woman that’s like her.

“I’ll talk it over with her when she wakes up.” He hung up the phone and walked back to the room. Sara was sitting up in the bed waiting for him with the sheet dangling off her creamy white skin.

“What did you need to talk over with me?”

Evan stared at Sara’s perky nipples. The hunger he felt the previous night resurfaced. “For some reason, I can’t remember.
